Movie For Free

Yesterday afternoon my wife and I and four friends went to a local Regal Theater to see Superman Returns. Wife went to purchase tickets and was told "I'm not charging him (me in a wheelchair) for a ticket." How about that! I seem to remember that recently Regal Theaters lost a lawsuit for not providing appropriate wheelchair accommodations. Well, we went into the theater and to my amazement came to a large metal platform with railings that easily swallowed my chair. Best viewing vantage I've had since SCI. There were three identical platforms in various places in the theater. We thoroughly enjoyed Superman--a great movie, but not for little children. After the movie we went to a nearby steakhouse. Boy was it crowded, but we snagged an outside table that would take the six of us. Delicious meal and good company, too. When presented out tab, the waitress told me, "An anonymous benefactor has paid $20 of your bill because of your military service." This person must have seen my "Proud Member of The Paralyzed Veterans of America" sticker on the chair's seat back. What a refreshing day for me and my wife. Shows that there are good people still walking this earth.

Hey Neighbor....

Glad you had a good time at the movies and dinner.......The younger generations (myself included) should do that for our veterans more often. Thank you for serving your country so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have. I try to do things like that occasionally.....or at least shake someones hand or even give a hug.

I am almost within a stones throw of where you live......
Have a nice evening......

I have been really wanting to go see a movie, but I have a stupid question: Can someone sit beside you in the w/c section (i.e. are there regular seats there, too), or do we have to sit on different rows? I want to be able to sit with my family!

Also, I am really happy that someone took the time to thank you for your service to our country. Let me add my thanks to you, too!

wanttolive, I was a big-time movie goer until I gave up my car four years ago (once went to Sacramento and saw "Falling Down" ; "Groundhog Day:" & "Leap of Faith " in one day at theaters scattered around the city).

Yes, your friends and/or family can sit with you in the w/c section.

Depends on the theater, but usually there isn't really a "wheelchair section" - there will be a couple of rows where one or two seats at the end of a row have been removed to make room for a wheelchair, so your family members will just sit next to you in the same row.

In stadium style theaters, it's similar except that some of the removed seats are in the middle of the row as well.

If you go to the movies with someone, say they're your attendant. The theater is supposed to allow your 'attendant' in for free, then you can just split the cost of you. Some theaters don't know that so wont honor it, but that's what I was told!

In addition to Regal, I think it's also Carmike Cinemas that also does not charge for the person in wheelchair & one "attendant"....I know there is one chain besides Regal, but I can't remember 100% who it is...I THINK it's Carmike....

They did that when I was first paralyzed twenty-one years ago. Then they stopped for a while citing that some people in wheelchairs didn't want the preferrential treatment. The last time I went to the show (maybe 2 or 4 years ago) I was able to get in free again. Weird.
