Caths in microwave?
I need some help here (and back up).
I started "clean cathing" and not sterile cathing (god damn medicare). My Urologist says that he saw somewhere that people microwave their caths before reusing! is this ok/true? if so, what type of caths can one microwave? how else do you guys wash and store for next use? soap? alcohol? hot/cold water? where do you cath into when out of the house? where do you store clean caths? NEED HELP ;-) -T |

ok...This is my experience...
I was just out of rehab right, so my friend who is t-12 says his mom nukes his caths for a short amount of time after he uses them. So we talked to her and that seemed quicker than boiling them. Fast forward...theres this AWEFUL smell lurking from the kitchen. Wouldn't you know my mom heated them up wayyy to long and they were all melted and turning black . We had company, everybody wanting to know what the hell that smell was, opening all the doors and windows. Cooked caths don't sound too appealing so we were all hush hush about it. Anyone hungry??? ![]() Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know that, so it goes on flying anyways--unknown |

I use the clear mentor straight tipped catheters. I wash them with soap and warm water after each use and store them in a clean towel.
You can get a closed cath system for going out. I use one by mentor, but other companies make them. It has a prelubed catheter inside the bag, and it includes everything you need for steril cathing if you're out somewhere. They are in a nice small package and I keep 3-5 of them in my backpack when I go out. _____ Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself. |

I soak mine in the stuff you wash baby bottles in.[milton] After I was my hands, [I use hexal hand wash,] I use the cath wet. I find it easy to have a bucket to drain into and less risk of touching the the loo. When I am finished I rise it out with hot water and drop it back in the sterile solution. If I go out a new plastic bag can be used to carry your cath. I also put KY jell in a plastic syringe that way I use only what I need.
Good luck bear1019 Pops. |

mentor coude tipped plastic (pvc?) are my bladder invading drainpipe of choice. all i do is wash them in hot water and dial antibacterial soap, store in a tray in a cabinet. i also keep a "road" package in my backpack. never heard of going the nuclear route. i've cathed in restaurants, home, work, friend's, even in my truck, and this combined with uroquid acid #2, and i've been uti free for over 6 months at least. YAY!!!

Microwave on low setting only or they will melt. You can boil them for 5-10 minutes.

My husband just rinses it and has no trouble. He gets a mild infection about every 3 months but just takes 3 days of antibiotics and switches to a new cath. No problems

Oh, he uses a 14 french red rubber cath, rinses in warm water and dries in a paper towel and then wraps in a paper towel. He uses a glob of surgi lube on the end and keeps the cath, extra sandwich baggies to pee in and the lube in a zip lock bag and puts it in his sock. works out well for him

If you do go the microwave route, place a cup of water in there with the catheters. NEVER run a microwave without anything in it to absorb the microwaves or they will bounce back into the magnetron and damage your oven.
