Experiencing Nerve Impulses

G'day all.

I sustained an injury to my T/5 & T/6 eight months ago in a cycling accident. Had a fracture and a burst with compression and Harrington rods inserted at T2-T9. The injury was complete(ASIA A) but that changed shortly thereafter to where I can feel pressure touch on all parts below the injury level, some temperature sensation and push the bowels and contract stomach muscles voluntarily (helps with trunk balance).

I was curious to know if anyone on the board feels their nerve impulses working below the injury level when they attempt to send signals for movement. It feels like it would if one were flexing muscles but with a tingling charge that is sent upon command. I can do this all the way down to my toes and even focus it in specific areas . I can get my toes to twitch on both feet but man it takes some effort! My inpatient doc (who I see periodically) at Shepherd Hospital says these signals don't weaken but actually get stronger over time and eventually may lead to motor kicking in--just can't say when of course. I was curious to know if anyone here has ever had this happen to them or are experiencing it currently. Any answers out there?

Thanks.

Wheelie:

I got the same sensations in in-patient. Your doctor is right, it does get stronger. To the point where hopefully the motor does kick in. Mine started the day after my decompression and just got stronger from then.

Thanks.

Glad to know it means something posititve and to hear the doctor say something positive is a good. I can feel sensation in my genitals again as well. At least I know there is something down there. I take that as a win! The fact that I can even move my stomach muscles in and out voluntarily works for me. I notice they are getting stronger and stronger--and flatter!

I was at the park downtown today for the first time in ages and felt so uncomfortable since it was a place I would run, skate, or bike for years. I want to get these legs going eventually.

I was diagnosed T4/5/6 Asia A complete, since I have sensation and movement till about an inch and a half or two below my nipples I call myself a T6. Unfortunately for me it has not changed, glad to hear you are doing better.

I constantly feel what I can best describe as a slight electrical shock running through my legs all the way to my toes. It is almost always there. It has not gotten worse or better, but it has not led to any recovery either.

Hopefully yours will lead to something. Best of luck.

Wheelie,

that sounds like good news! I got the same thing, but once i started moving my right toe, it stopped, on both sides. but my right leg continued to improve, so shocks are good! Keep on trying to move anything. What got my toe to move is i would close my eyes and focus on what i wanted to move then i'd attempt it adn then i'd think i'm kicking my feet like crazy and somthing just jumped! goodluck man!

Thanks guys. Have any of you been able to suck in your stomach muscles voluntarily or push out stool on your own? It's good to see the stomach muscles move when I tell them too. I do a digi-stim w/o a suppository and then I can actually push things out. At first I thought it was doing its own thing, but once I contracted the anal muscles I could feel it moving in and out as I commanded it to. Doc at Shepherds says that it's a good indication I may get some mobility back. Being a para is rough and usually we get canceled out as far as recovery goes, but I know of quite a few who have been fortunate to get those legs back. I can create some voluntary movement in my legs if I am having a spasm every now and then. Sounds crazy but it happens.

I went to the city park for the first time in ages and it was a little uncomfortable since that was one of the places I would work out or socialize. Still had a good time though even though I didn't have these legs to work with.
