Smelly urine, What to do?

I've had smelly urine for quite sometime & have no UTI & was wondering what to do to alleviate the smell. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Do you eat a lot of asparagus?

Seriously, it could be what you're eating on a daily basis. Are you drinking lots of water?

I second what Lewis stated ....

Water..Water..WATER.

Drink lots of water to help clear urine- minimize smell and decrease sediment, etc.

A lot of people swear by Vitamin C.

Ray, how do you manage your bladder? It is difficult to make recommendations without more information.

You also need to look at your diet and meds, both of which can sometimes cause smelly urine in anyone.

I have an indwelling supra-pubic catheter that I change once 3-4 weeks. I change my day bag every week & night bag every 2 weeks. I drink plenty of water. Also, I do drink about a case of beer a week. I have a baclofen pump, take Valium when needed, zanaflex (8-12mg per day), & just started taking oxycontin (20mg twice per day).

Do you clean your urinary bags daily? This is really important for both infection control and odor control.

Unfortunately many people who use indwelling catheters will have a foul odor to their urine, as the urine is more likely to be colonized with multiple bacteria all the time.

You could certainly try either (or both) vitamin C (up to 1000 mg. daily) and cranberry capsules to see if this helps any.

You drink a lot of alcohol. I am concerned about this for your health in general. Can you cut back? If you need help with this, see your physician.
