My toenail is coming off!
When I was taking my shoes and socks off last night, I noticed a dark spot at the base of my right foot's big toe. I looked closer, and it's not a spot, but a gap between the toenail and the skin. I don't think it was like that the day before.
What do I need to do about this? It's too late to call or see a doc, so I have to wait until monday. _____ Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself. |

I am not sure that I understand. Is the dark spot underneath your toenail or in your skin? Usually dark spots indicate presence of hemorrhage under the skin or toenail. Is there any reddening or inflammation of the skin around the dark spot? If there is, you might be getting a cellulitis and should go to an emergency room. If not, you probably don't have to worry about it too much. Wise.

i had a similar problem with my fingernail...it was caused by a nail fungus, so that doctor gave me some lamisil! you should have it looked at because this could be a sign of some sort of infection ongoing in your body!

jimnms - toes and infections can be a serious problem in a person living with SCI. I would urge you to make an appointment with a podiatrist. Are you near Jackson, MS? If so, I would contact the rehab there and ask for recommendation of a podiatrist that is familiar with SCI. CRF

A bacterial infection can also be the cause of yellow, crusty or thickened nails that separate from the nail bed. A nail biopsy should always be done to determine the type of infection before treatment begins.

Toe nails pulling away can be a sign of Amyloidyosis and lung problems.

The doc said it looks like an injury rather than an infection. He said infections usually start from the tip of the nail and work back, but the gap is at the base of the toe.
When I'm on the shower chair, my feet will not stay on the foot rest and are always kicking out, I've had cuts on my foot from where it's kicked things, I guess my toe could have hit something. _____ Learn from the mistakes of others, you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself. |
