Throbbing Pain

My son is 9 months post injury - C7 incomplete. Recently he has started having what he calls "throbbing" pain in his butt, penis and testicles. I ask if it is burning or tingling and he says, "NO, it is throbbing!" He has had tingling in his legs and feet, also, but he says this pain "hurts". He is on neurotin and is also taking ibuprofen at times. What is this? Does he need to see his doctor asap or is this normal? (Unfortunately!) Thanks.

The "throbbing" pain your son is feeling could be a good thing. Since he is only nine months post injury his body is still adjusting and recovery may still be occurring especially since he is incomplete.

Determining what causes the pain can be very difficult. Is he religiously doing his weight shifts?

Just because his butt, penis and testicles hurt does not necessarily mean the pain is there. Some other part of his body could be the problem and his body might make him think that the pain is in his groin and butt.

Just my thinkings... good luck!

It is likely that this is a new form of his neuropathic pain. It often changes during the first year. Neuropathic pain can be aggrevated by other problems though, so it would also be important to rule out any local problems such as UTI, epidydimitis, skin problems, etc. in the area.

Have you or he discussed with his SCI physician? How much Neurontin is he taking? This may need to be adjusted or other medications or techniques (such as TENS or acupuncture) tried.
