HELP! I need a PCA

I am in dire need of finding a PCA. This person will do my personal care (dress, undress, peri care, transfers) morning and evening. At most 20 min AM, 10 min PM. And also help my partner with the housework. My bath is handled by Home Health. Three days a week, just bath, nothing more.
I need to know where to advertise. And would a free and board be a reasonable exchange? This person would be free to hold a full time job, as once in my chair, I am extremely independent.
I am at a loss as to finding programs for funding PCA here in Florida and I do not qualify for Medwaiver. I would like to hear from anyone with any ideas. Thanks,

Julie Z

Hey Julie,
I have run into the same kind of problem latley. I can't seem to find reliable help. A few years ago, I was able to find decent help quickly by placing an ad in the paper. Recently, the responses I have gotten were for the most part poor. Certianly not the kind of people I would feel comfortable in my home.

Do you live near a college or nursing school? I've found some decent PCA's by posting an ad at a neaby college.

How did you find your prior PCA's? Where did you advertise?

Good luck!

Brad

Local college, nursing programs. the room and board is a reasonable exchange for a student.
Try advertising in foreign papers. The Irish echo, etc.

Brad,
Up till I moved here two years ago, I lived in Vermont. I got on two fantastic programs, one was the local Home Health agency. They covered 3 hrs/day, all my bathing, dressing, bowel program and exercise. Vermont has a great program call Personally Directed Attendant Care. This program covered all my other needs, shopping, cleaning, mealprep, and bedtime routince. Thy gave 3 hrs/day. Found the aides for this program from ads I placed in the newspaper. I was very pleased with who I found there.
When I got to Florida, I found out I was lucky to get a shower three times a week and NO housekeeping at all/ So my OS had to pick up the slack, but now his health is failing. So I am between a rock and hard place.
