I was unlucky 2 monts ago and developed a rash that turned into a small thumb nail size stage 2 presure sore. it was located on the inner bottom of my left thigh right under the but cheek. in my 6.5 years of being injured i never had any skin problems. i could sit for 12-15 hours a day with no problems. After finding out i had the sore i put myself on bed rest for 22 hours a day determined to heal this wound. it took 5 weeks of laying around but eventually it healed. this was 2 weeks ago since it healed. i have been trying to build up my sitting tolerace back to 12-15 hours, but have reached a wall. after i sit for 6 hours the area were the sore was turns slightly red. it is really buming me out, i have a Vegas trip 10/12 - 10/14 and am worried the sore will come back after sitting for 12-15 hours a day.
I use a J2 jell cussion and am in a powerchair that tilts. i do presure reliefs every 20 minutes. Should i try using a different cussion??? whats the deal with rohoos?? is there any skin strengthening cream i can use?? ill take any advise.

Hi J2Extreme,
That area may never look or even be "normal" again. You need to figure out a way to sit in your chair and not have any pressure on that area for a longer period of time until you're sure that it's as healed as well as it ever will. Were you able to figure out what caused the sore in the first place? A wrinkled cushion cover or pants etc? You mention that you had a rash in that area but it sounds like there was also added pressure there that allowed it to develop into a pressure sore. Keep doing your weight shifts. Good luck.

pressure sore advise
J2Extreme - how old is your cushion? Can you be evaluated at a seating clinic, before your trip, to be sure that your cushion and support are correct?
Had you seen a doctor about the original problem? If not, I would urge you to talk with your SCI doctor before your trip. If you are sitting 12 - 15 hours a day before this area is adequately restored and your seating is incorrect, you run a high risk of having the area breakdown again. If you are unable to do any of the above, you really need to give priority to getting off of the area several times during this long period of sitting. This following offer good information on cushions:CRF Last edited by SCI-Nurse; 10-06-2005 at 09:49 PM. Reason: errors + additional info |

Pressure Sores
I used Miracle Mist Plus on a pressure sore that I had been treating for more than four months. Within a month of using MMP, the sore receded and has not returned. I am sitting my normal length of time, nothing different. This product was written up in New Mobility recently. MMP is available from Healthy Life and Times, www.healthy-times.com

thanks for everyones advise. thank you sci nurse for those links. it may look like i need to get a new cusion mabee try a air filled rohoe one. i have had my cussion for about 5 years. i never had a problem with it but mabee its time for a change. i will try to get in bed for 1 or of every every 6 hours im up when im in vegas, but dont know if it will happen. theres not enogh time before my trip to go get sized and order for a new cussion before my trip. everyone wish me luck and vibe me 1-2 hours of your sitting tolerance.
ill take any other advise anyone will give me. ps- sci nurse, i did go n show my doctor the sore, both when i first discovered it, and 5 weeks later when it healed. they said it looked great.
