how many vitamins are too much?
does somebody know how much is too much? My doc said if I dont use them they get peed out. She dont have a good track record so I want a second opinion. I take my Neurontin 1800mg, Ditropan 20mg, and Macrobid 100mg.
The days I lift I drink my protien shake for recovery. I quit taking the Ginsing and Chromium Picolinate because it effected my bladder. I took these when I was AB and a runner so they got used up. My vitamins are a multi so the list is long but here goes A 5000 I.U C 1200 MG D 200 IU E 900 IU B1 25 MG B2 25 MG NIACIN 25 MG B6 25 MG FOLATE 400 MCG BIOTIN 25 MCG PANTOTHENIC ACID 25MG CALCIUM 130 MG IRON 4.1 MG PHOSPHORUS 100 MG IODINE 112.5 MG MAGNESIUM 1.5 MG ZINC 12.5 MG COPPER 1.5 MG |

Only excess water soluable vitamins are urinated out. Fat soluable vitamins (A, D, E, K) are not and death from toxicity is possible. Your MD ain't too bright about this most basic piece of nutritional advice. As far as the rest, I'd check the bottle, certain 100% RDA is sufficient in my opinion.
You may want to think about the protein shake. With a balanced diet a little higher in protein you can probably drop this. Heavy protein loads on a body that doesn't need it can be hard on the kidneys, which is where it is broken down and excreted. It's not like you're a tournament body builder with special needs. You should research this one further with a professional dietician (RD) or nutritionist, or read professional information on the subject. |

On the docs defense(nurse practitioner) I gave her all the same info and she didn't see a problem, But I am still concerned.

I believe it takes a lot to die to vitamin toxicity, but short of knowing those amounts for A, D, E, and K I would be inclined not to exceed the RDA unless a special reason exists. In addition, though you may not die of toxicity, sustained excessive levels could tax those organs responsible for eliminating the excess. This then would be an unneccessary harm that could take its toll over time, not acute.
Best bet is to follow up on the subject. Do an internet search using "hypervitaminosis". |

Your Vitamin A is fine, USRDA for D is 400IU but if you drink fortified milk you're fine. My gynocologist said I should take 800IUs of E for breast health but I have a family thing of breast cancer. The normal RDA for E is 30IUs. I eat a lot of greens so never really worry about vitamin K.
I eat a protein bar for breakfast everyday because my albumin is a tad low but that's on my doc's say so after blood and urine tests. A low blood test alone should not be taken as a reason to up protein beyond normal levels for ABs. There is a lot of literature out there though for non-milk drinkers about the need for wheelers to take Vitamin D supplements and get outside year round for about 15 minutes a day. Oh, and you need about 1000 to 1200 mg of calcium a day from dietary or supplement sources. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow." |
