Fairfield residents to hold fund-raiser for woman injured in accident

Fairfield residents to hold fund-raiser for woman injured in accident
PATTI WOODS, Correspondent
FAIRFIELD — On a recent weekday evening, a group of women gathered in an office in the Southport section of town. Some knew one another; others met for the first time. But all had one thing in common: their friendship with town resident Jen Ferentzy.

The women gathered to plan a music festival, "Jenfest," set for Saturday at Cranbury Park in Norwalk to raise money for Ferentzy, who was paralyzed in an automobile accident a year ago.

A lifelong Fairfield resident, Ferentzy graduated from Fairfield High School, and in 2003 married her sweetheart, Steve, the lead vocalist in the band The Tracks. The future looked rosy for the newlyweds.

But that changed in an instant.

On Nov. 10, 2004, Steve picked up Jen at the Fairfield Railroad Station after work. As he was making a turn off Park Avenue, four cars came racing down the road. Two of the cars hit the couple's car, causing Jen to be ejected from the car.

"News travels fast among our network of friends," said Krys Marushak, a longtime friend of the couple.

The morning after the accident, Marushak received a call from a mutual friend who relayed the story of the accident. Jen had suffered a spinal cord injury, and she was paralyzed from the upper chest down. "I got a call at home from one of the women she was working with," said Maureen Main, for whom Jennifer had worked. "Everyone was calling, saying, 'What should we do?' Rather than send flowers, we decided to collect money." The initial collection yielded about $8,000, which turned out to be greatly needed. "It helped her purchase her first wheelchair," Main said.
