Ukrainian Police Investigate Illegal Stem Cell Therapy Clinics

The reason why I post this is because at least three companies that are currently offering fetal stem cell transplants for a variety of conditions get their fetal tissues from Ukraine: Medra, Emcell, Institute of Regenerative Medicine (Barbados).

A prosecutor’s office in Ukraine’s Donetsk region has launched a criminal case against several doctors at private clinics who are charged with illegally transplanting human organs, Obozrevatel reported.

“It is the first criminal case of its kind,” Alexander Egorov, the Mariupol city prosecutor, said.

He told the media that frozen material taken from the liver and brains of embryos were delivered from different regions to Mariupol.

Currently there is no law stipulating criminal liability for selling anatomical material from dead human embryos in Ukraine.

President Victor Yushchenko, however, recently ordered his cabinet to work out a state program for transplantation issues for 2006-2010.

Stem cell therapy, forbidden in a number of countries, has become very popular among the rich and famous in recent years. For example, Russian pharmaceutical magnate Vladimir Bryntsalov has injected a dose of stem cells into himself and currently says at 59 he feels like he is 20.

Wise,

I'm reading lots about it in Ukrainian & Russian press.

According to Laws in all post Soviet republics its very grey area since there is almoust no laws concerning embryo recearch & treatments....

The only way they can charge those companies is illegal trade in human organs (spare parts-sorry being cynical here), done without concent of relatives.

But I suspect (I'm cynical again)-its becoming lucrative business & some groups in power simply want their cut in it.

I just hope Brukhovetskiy done his paperwork correctly &/or doesn't forget to share profits with his "roof" & superiors (cynical 3rd time)

It is very worrisome that it is lucrative. That means that many people are getting scammed. Wise.

Now we comming to interesting conclusion/observation regarding your post in OUTRAGED thread......

Lets suppose that Fetal & ESC reaserch & treatment will be criminalised in US........

This might mean that people tacking treatment overseas will be percecuted in US ,depends how law will be designed

Let us hope that they don't do it. This is what I don't understand. At the moment, by failing to fund the research that would provide sources of cells for clinical trials, they are forcing people overseas. For example, isn't it crazy that people would be going to Turkey to get bone marrow autografts? This is something that could be done in the United States except for the fact that there is no funding for such trials at the present time in spinal cord injury.

In terms of fetal cell transplants, the reason why I say that it is a scam is because few clinics who do fetal cell transplants do tissue type matching. The Russians believe that fetal cells are not rejected. How do they know? Based on my experience with animal studies, fetal cells are rejected, even when transplanted into the spinal cords. So, in the case of Vladimir Bryntsalov, if he received unmatched fetal cells, it is very doubtful that any of the cells survived longer than a week or two after it was transplanted.

Wise.
