Benefits of Laser therapy for sci & other

Clients of the Anne Penman Laser Therapy Center aren't the only ones hopeful about the benefits of laser therapy. Dr. Kimberly R. Byrnes, of the department of neuroscience at Georgetown University, believes laser therapy will one day be used to treat patients with spinal-cord injury. She has been studying the effects of laser therapy and through her experiments on rats found that the therapy improved nerve regeneration in the spinal cord.

Her findings were published in the journal "Lasers in Surgery and Medicine" earlier this year. Byrnes collaborated on the study with Dr. Juanita Anders, who continues to do research at her lab at the Uniformed Services University, the U.S. military's medical school. Anders, who also published her findings in the journal "Lasers in Surgery and Medicine" this year, found that low-power laser irradiation improved recovery following spinal-cord injury in rats. Additional research is ongoing throughout the country to determine how the therapy actually works. One theory is that the laser beams energize the body's own immune system, enhancing its ability to rejuvenate cells. Other researchers are trying to determine if laser treatment that has proved effective in treating rats could be applied to humans.

In the meantime, Fillo is reaping the benefits of laser therapy along with other clients who are willing to test this innovative method.

"I just wanted to do it swiftly," Fillo says. "I didn't want to cut back, I just made up my mind that I wanted to do it. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be."

Fillo found the laser treatments to be very relaxing, although she has gained some weight and plans on undergoing some additional laser treatments to help her control her eating.

"It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. But I think you have to really know you want to quit."
