I'm a T12 incomplete with a AFO on the right leg, 91/2 month post. I currently use a cane, but mostly try to carry it off the ground as much as possible. So far I have walked 1.19 miles straight just to see if I can do it, but mostly I just walk from the car to work. I can make it up and down 28 stairs, but then I really need the cane. My right leg is weaker then the left. At home I don't use anything to include wearing my AFO. I think this has helped me walk better than having to depend on any type of support. By the way, yes I have fell down quit a bit early on but not that much any more, I have drop right foot

I am a C6 incomplete quad 2 years post. I can walk about a quarter mile with forearm crutches and an AFO on my right leg.

My left leg works normally but my right leg is much weaker and I cannot control my right foot so the toe drags- thus the need for the AFO. The Afo keeps my foot bent at a 90° angle.

I use a wheelchair to go to the movies or the mall, and I usually walk to work, the post office and small errands.

Problem is, if I fall I am unable to get myself back up without the use of a chair (or something of equivalent height) to push on.

That was a great question!

Functional? -- No
Distance? -- I do my so-called "laps" around my house probably equaling out to 300 feet. I use my platform Walker since I have very minimal arm movement and cannot manage a regular Walker. I will post a picture of what I use.

Maxed out at .32 miles, never broke that. mcgringo sounds exactly like me.

Kinda functional. Mainly because I can walk into walmart w/ 1 crutch, 1 afo, and get an electric cart.

I go for 30 minutes on the elliptical trainers and I think I can do about 1/4 mile on a good day down at the park. Single point cane.
Huge improvement over 1 year.

I'm C6/7 and my personal best is about 350 feet with two straight canes and stand by assist(just in case I spaz out and fall). I use a walker a little bit at home. I can go from room to room if I'm feeling frisky, but I have to sit when I get there. My endurance is for crap, I'm slow, one toe drags a bit, my everything hurts while I'm walking, and often I can get real jerkity jumpity spazzy, so I'm pretty scared to do it by myself.

My daughter, 15, is C/6 post 11-months and she walks with crutches and a quad cane during therapy. She still needs her chair for long distances. Although her left side is weaker than her right, her goal is to walk unassisted, and one day run a marathon like Pat Rummerfield (check out his bio on the internet) Never give up! Strive to be the best you can be!

I've mostly used the pair of quad canes when I'm out and about, like to the drugstore, bank, groceries, etc. I think I can walk about 1000 feet maybe? Not especially functional since I can't carry much in my hands (I put things in a knapsack or messenger bag). It's getting better though. For short distances I'm using a single quad cane (like in and around the house). I'm 4 months post and hoping to get better.
