Newton Medical offers inpatient rehabilitation

Newton Medical offers inpatient rehabilitation

With the recent approval and licensure for an inpatient rehabilitation unit, Newton Medical Center is now offering another health care program to residents in Newton and surrounding communities.
"We're providing alternatives that are tailored to the needs of patients and their families, and yet are responsive to their post-injury rehabilitation needs," said Steve Kelly, NMC president and CEO.

The goal of the inpatient rehabilitation program is to help a person return to a productive life by maximizing independence. This is accomplished through the coordination of care in the delivery of physical and cognitive rehabilitation services. The primary focus of the program is the development of skills necessary for the patient to live with a physically challenging condition.

Rehabilitation conditions commonly treated in the rehabilitation unit include stroke, hip fracture, joint replacement, arthritis, amputation, neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and ALS. Also treated are brain injury, congenital deformities, spinal cord injuries and other disabling conditions such as cancer, chronic heart failure and infection.

Certain criteria must be met to be eligible for inpatient rehabilitation. For more information, to request a pre-admission screening or a tour of the rehabilitation unit, call 283-2700, extension 3500.

An open house for Newton Medical Center's Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is planned for 4 to 6 p.m. July 29.

Beth Nemeth of Halstead is the director of the new inpatient rehabilitation program. She is the former program director of Halstead Hospital's Rehabilitation Unit. Nemeth's experience includes patient educator at Kaiser Permanente, Bedford, Texas, department director at Northeast Community Hospital, Bedford, Texas, and adjunct faculty at Tarrant County College, Fort Worth, Texas.

Dr. Xavier Ng of Wichita is the medical director of the inpatient rehabilitation program. Ng is certified in rehabilitation medicine and has served as the medical director for several rehabilitation units, including Halstead Hospital. He is the medical director for Newton Medical Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Newton Professional Centre.
