Neck injury may end Crichton's career

Chiefs utility Loki Crichton might not play rugby union again after a collision during his team's Super 12 loss to the Queensland Reds on Friday night.

But Chiefs team doctor Zig Khouri says Crichton is very lucky.

Crichton suffered a serious neck injury in the collision with a Reds player five minutes from halftime at Waikato Stadium.

X-rays have since revealed no spinal cord damage but at least a dislocation of his neck and probably a fracture, requiring surgery to stabilise it and so ending his season, with a chance it might also end his career.

"It's premature to say if Loki will be able to play rugby again but certainly there is a risk he may not play again," Dr Khouri said.

That would not be known until after surgery, which is likely to take place in Waikato Hospital later this week, and after considerable consultation with Crichton himself and various specialists

Sadly rugby can account for quite a few sci's.
Generally it is rugby union not rugby league (there are 2 kinds)due to the more intense scrums and more multi-directional play.
I have played both codes and over the years had a couple of scares but no real neck injuries.
While I was in hospital I met a couple of guys who had not been so lucky ,there was a 16 year old kid who had suffered an incomplete lesion in the "c's" during a tackle in a school union match.
Also there was a samoan guy who was built like a brick shithouse who had played union at the professional level ,his sci didn't happen on the rugby field but his neck was weaker than it been due to an existing rugby injury.( c injury as well)
The spinal unit was full of strong young men but I would say he would have been the strongest.
