2005 National Wheelchair Softball Tournament
2005 National Wheelchair Softball Tournament
Columbus, OH. - Four hundred athletes from across the United States will roll into Columbus, Ohio, August 11-13,2005 for the 29th Annual National Wheelchair Softball Tournament. The 2005 Tournament is being hosted by the Columbus Pioneers sponsored by Ohio Wheelchair Sports Association (OWSA) and the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. The tournament will be held at two sites, Rhodes Park, one of the few wheelchair accessible multi-recreational facilities in the United States and Cooper Stadium, home of the Columbus Clippers. The Columbus Pioneers were hosts to the silver anniversary of the National Wheelchair Softball Tournament in 2001. John Wall and Jerry Jones are bringing the NWST back to Columbus. The NWST is a double elimination tournament. Awards are presented to the first through fourth place teams, the all tournament teams, and the most valuable players for the tournament. John Wall organized the Columbus Pioneers in 1993. The team consists of twenty wheelchair athletes from throughout Ohio. In 1997 the Pioneers finished 2nd in Division II and 7th in the nation. In 2001 the team excelled to Division I and finished 2nd in the nation. Wheelchair Softball is an exciting and challenging adaptive sport that enables people with a variety of disabilities to compete as a team. The National Wheelchair Softball Association (NWSA) is the governing body for Wheelchair Softball. Today there are over 30 teams nationwide. The game is played on hard surfaces such as a parking lot for easy maneuverability in a wheelchair and with a 16-inch softball, which allows wheelchair players to keep one hand on the wheelchair while catching softball without a glove. The game is played under the official rules of the 16-inch slow pitch softball as approved by the Amateur Softball Association of America. The Ohio Wheelchair Sports Association, a non-profit group, was founded in 1970 to raise awareness of wheelchair athletics. Today OWSA sponsors the Columbus Pioneers Wheelchair Softball team, The Columbus Buckeye Wheelers Wheelchair Basketball team, Low Rider Quad Rugby team, a handcycling group, and a wheelchair tennis group along with other adaptive sports associated with the 35th consecutive Ohio Wheelchair Games. I just returned from the National tournament in OH and it was a great time. The RIC Cubs 1st team won the tournament beating Nebraska. The RIC Cubs 2nd team that I play on placed 7th place in division 1. We are very happy with having 2 teams place in the top 10 in the nation. It was one of the best experiences that I have had so far. GO CUBS!!!!!
