Safety Tips for Gas Grilling This Summer

Safety Tips for Gas Grilling This Summer
Tue Jun 25,11:58 PM ET

TUESDAY, June 25 (HealthScoutNews) -- A new industry standard to prevent over-filling of propane grill gas tanks is designed to prevent leaks that can cause fires and explosions.

Each year in the United States, there are about 600 propane grill fires/explosions that injure about 30 people, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ( news - web sites) (CPSC), which helped develop the new standard.

It requires propane tanks to have an over-fill prevention device installed in new tanks. The new tanks have valve handles with three prongs, while older tanks have valve handles with five prongs. People with older propane tanks should trade them in for the new, safer tanks, the CPSC says.

And the CPSC offers these gas grill safety tips to ensure your barbeque is well done:

Check grill hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes and leaks. Make sure there are no sharp bends in the hose or tubing.

Move gas hoses as far away as possible from hot surfaces and dripping hot grease.

Always store propane gas containers upright.

Never store a spare gas container under or near the grill or indoors.

Never store or use flammable liquids, like gasoline, near the grill.

Never keep a filled container in a hot car or car trunk. Heat will cause the gas pressure to increase, which may open the relief valve and allow gas to escape.
