Milkhaus Laboratory Initiates Phase II Trial of Product for Treating Chronic Prostatitis
PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(BW HealthWire)--March 22, 2002--Milkhaus Laboratory, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, announced today that it had begun enrolling patients in a Phase II, open-label clinical trial of its product, ML-04, for the treatment of chronic prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland which is a common urologic condition. Symptoms include lower back and pelvic pain and often those of urinary obstruction. The acute form of the condition is caused by bacterial infection and is treated with antibiotics. However, the origins of the chronic form are more elusive; bacterial infection may or may not be present. Chronic prostatitis is estimated to afflict up to half of all men at least once during their lifetime. Traditional treatment involves anti-inflammatory agents and alpha-blockers, heat, massage and sometimes surgery. The outcome of such treatment is often ineffective.
"Our Phase II clinical evaluation of this product, ML-04, showed efficacy in reducing the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia or `BPH.' While distinctive urological problems, chronic prostatitis and BPH share some pathological similarities. Evidence suggests our therapeutic agent might also be effective in treating chronic prostatitis," said Mr. John MacDonald, the Company's President. "Given a successful outcome, we think a product for treating both BPH and chronic prostatitis represents a very attractive `package' for licensees interested in the urology market," he concluded.
Milkhaus Laboratory, Inc. is a privately held biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutic agents for chronic diseases in man and animals. It has completed successful clinical trials of two of its products: ML-03 in Phase II trials for COPD, chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis, and ML-04 in a Phase II trial for BPH. A formal clinical evaluation of the company's product for the remediation of scars is scheduled for later this year.
