Objective: Neuropathic pain is one of the most common complaints after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). The mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain are not fully elucidated. A novel anticonvulsant, neurontin (gabapentin), which is a synthetic structural analogue of GABA, has shown to have beneficial effects in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Nevertheless, no standardized clinical trial has ever been performed to evaluate the efficacy of neurontin in the treatment of neuropathic pain after SCI. This study will determine the efficacy of neurontin in the treatment of SCI-related neuropathic pain.
Design: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, cross-over study.
Setting: Clinical rehabilitation center.
Participants: Forty participants aged 18-65, with moderate to sever pain below the level of injury and a traumatic injury far greater than 30 days.
