Dogs dinner in District VIII Chinese market
ACCORDING to a recent article appearing in national tabloid Blikk, there are more than 100 ways to "wok" your dog if you are a diplomat living in Budapest. On February 18, the paper ran an article claiming dog meat for human consumption is readily available in Hungary, according to a Chinese national called Chang-Li, who has been doing business in Hungary for more than 15 years.
The businessman was cited saying, "Hungarians are more than willing to breed (and supply) dogs to the Chinese community living here."
It was revealed that there are certain smallholdings near the town of Monor (about 30km east of Budapest) which supply the dog meat. He added, "However, the meat of the animals here is tasteless."
He added that authentic home tasting meat is being "imported" into Hungary from China and South Korea by individuals using diplomatic passports via airplane.
Chang-Li claims that the dogs used for consumption were cross-breeds fattened to about 10kgs before going under the cleaver.
He said that dog meat was only available for "insiders" and that the only Chinese market to actually sell the meat (for Hungarians to taste) was the Józsefváros Chinese market (located on Kõbányai út in Budapest's District VIII).
