Waiter "almost" got it right.

Wife and I went to a nice seafood restaraunt for a late lunch/early dinner.

They led us to a table right in the aisleway, said no thanks, let's take that one over there, out of the traffic pattern.

Young dude(even in waitroid years) is our server. Does a good job in getting started, good eye contact with both of us, telling us the specials. Start off with sauteed crab fingers(yum). Takes our entree order with the same good manners to both people. Wife had lobster salad, I had blackened catfish with shrimp sauce(woulda had to roll me out of there even if I wasn't in a chair).

Brings the check, TRIES TO HAND IT TO MY WIFE! *Snatch* it out of his hand and glare at him. He is instant stammer and deer in the headlights, backing away "hope y'all enjoyed it", gone. He comes and goes quickly dealing with payment. I stew a little.

Wife heads for bathroom as I wrapup. As I'm wheeling out, he had the misfortune of being in my path. Last second decide to be nice; "just curious, why did you try to hand my wife the check?" "Oh! uh...(drop eye contact, stare at the floor), I'm sorry sir, I,I,I,uh..." I wait til he looks up again. "You know, it's only my legs that don't work." Man I never saw anybody go beet red that fast(and being Irish I can blush with the best of 'em). Finished up with "I'm getting on you a little to make sure this doesn't happen to the next person that rolls in." "Yes sir."

I then rolled back to the table and improved the tip that I had left, knowing that he was watching. I mean he did a good job up to that point, and I had let off my steam. Probably an encounter he'll remember too.

I rolled out, full as a tick, overall happy with my lunch. We'll go back.

This is totally off topic, but why do seafood restaurants serve catfish? Sorry to steal your topic, but I've always wondered why.

Definitely a Southern thing. I grew up in Ohio and wouldn't have been caught dead eating a catfish, aquired the taste after having been down here forever.

Seafood restaraunts have always served a mix of "sea" and freshwater dishes so catfish is no different really, just a perception thing.

edit: ya know after re-reading my orig post, it could come across as a sexist thing, but it has nothing to do with that in my mind. I took it as a slight due to my being in a chair. And the way he reacted I believe I was right. Sorry if anybody read it different.

Do you think it would have been better if he just handed you the check or if he would have placed it in a middle ground between the two of you?

Aye McDuff,
I admit that when I read your post I thought, what, does he think the bill should've gone to him automatically just because he's a guy?!
Admit it - the waiter couldn't win either way!

good job duff man! once in a while a waiter will look to my date to order for me. omfg i hate that. hint to the wives/gfs/dates of wheeler guys: when the waitperson is about to present the bill, look away so they know you have no interest in it. guys: make eye contact ang gesture or speak to the waitperson as they are about to hand over the bill so they know you are expecting it to be handed to you. be vocal and take charge but don't be an ASS like i am sometimes.

CAUTION: This post is not politically correct, do not read if you are easily offended.

I have yet to have that happen to me, but I have a plan for when it does. If I'm out with my friends, and a waiter/ess looks to one of them to take my order, I'm going to do my best retard impression and start yelling "I WANT STEAK I WANT STEAK!"

Conan/Keps - The PC way of handling checks these days is to put it down between you, I would have been happy with that. That has always been my previous experiences, just pick it up from the table. But to hold it out towards my wife set me off, automatically assuming she is paying. Wrongo in my book.

Thanks Cspine, I kept my assholiness in check rather well I thought.

Jim, that will definitely leave an impression with the waitroid.
