vinegar?
Has anybody ever taken apple-cider vinegar to keep away UTI's? I have heard this works.
Thanks, Goody |

Never heard of apple-cider vinegar helping UTI's. I know cranberry helps (if you can stand cranberry!). I am trying odourless garlic supplements right now because I've heard it works and so far it seems to.

Vinegar
I have heard this before too, but never have seen a study done specifically in people with SCI or other types of neurogenic bladder. I suppose that if you take enough vinegar (drinking it should be fun!) that the acetic acid could possibly be excreted in your urine, making the urine more acid. Most (but not all) the common urinary tract infection bacteria do not grow well in more acid urine.
You can also acidify your urine (probably much easier) by taking 500-1000 mg. of vitamin C daily. Citris juices (orange, lemon, grapefruit) do NOT acidify the urine, but actually make it more alkaline. Plum juice is metabolized as an acid in the urine. Cranberry does acidify the urine some, but actually seems to do more as it helps prevent the adherance of bacteria to the walls of the bladder as well. Cranberry juice alone is rarely effective though as you must drink a lot of it for it to work. Cranberry capsules probably work better, but can cause loose stools and diarrhea in some people. " YES " Right-on you guys, I've been waiting years to hear this about vinegar. People are always bugging me cause I drink vinegar and pickle juice and hot mix juice. I am addicted to it, for the taste not the benefits.I absolutely love mezzetta hot mix and the juice is even better, though the only ingredient that's in it that I wonder about is called " sodium bisulfite" added as a color stableizer, do you know if this is harmful or not? God I hope not, I know there's lot's of salt in them, but oh well. PS. Gee if garlic is supposed to be good then I'm really doing well cause I get "extra garlic" pickles. See there I go again, now I have to go get some See-ya
