Spinal Stenosis
Pain management is based on a thorough evaluation of the type, cause, severity and location of the pain. There is not one solution for any given pain related to a given diagnosis. The experience of pain is very individual and therefore requires individuality in developing management techniques that will benefit effect relief.........SAH

lovely,
Surgery (laminectomy to give the spinal cord more room) is often necessary and preferable to prolonged pain management for the following reasons:
1. Stenosis of the spinal cord predisposes to spinal cord injury. That means that your spinal cord has much less room and is much more likely to be injured in a fall or even whiplash in seemingly minor car accidents. This is particularly true is the stenosis is in the cervical region. 2. Stenosis also may lead to formation of syringomyelia or cysts without the spinal cord. This is because the cerebral spinal fluid does not have room to pass by and may be shunted through the central canal. The increased flow or pressure of cerebrospinal fluid in the spinal cord may results in slow and progressive damage to the spional cord. 3. Stenosis may lead to tethering or adhesions of the spinal cord to the dura and the roots to the surrounding tissues. Such scarring may also contribute to the formation of syringomyelic cysts. Of course, the decision for surgery must be based on many parameters, including the judgement of the surgeon. If you have not had decompression surgery and have not obtained a second opinion, you should do so. Some doctors are more conservative than others and opinions are frequently variant amongst doctors. Wise. |
