It depends on what kind of insurance you had. If it's a one time settlement you should go for all you can get.
If there's going to be additional payments later (annual) as i've got then it's probably not as improtant. Three years ago a guy i was in rehab with had a t-4 injury and about a month after his accident he got a 300k cheque. I'm not sure how this compares to some others. Of course, if you watch those injury lawyer commercials, you should be getting millions. |

I think it depends on what happened. Also, are there laws in Canada restricting settlements? I didn't get a settlements. Probably could have, but I wasn't willing to sue someone because I'm a trespassing klutz!

I assume you have an attorney representing you. Do you also have a life care planner as a consultant? In my area, settlements are based much more on the life-care planning report than on any other information provided. A good life care plan looks at both your current and future predicted medical costs, including things like attendant care, equipment, supplies, meds, anticipated surgeries, etc. This must be highly individualized, and must also have input from an economist so that they can figure in estimated inflation, etc.
A good attorney will seek out an experience life-care planner who has extensive SCI experience. Many are nurses or physicians who work in the clinical SCI field. I see too many people who get wowed by a big number (ie, $1-2 million for example) and accept that, and then find out that after the attorney takes their 1/3- 1/2 cut that they end up running out of funds in just a few years.
