If you have symptoms of UTI that you can't clear, i.e.bladder spsms, increased spasticity, fever,etc.. a urine culture and sensitivity must be done. It tells wht the organism is, how mny nd also tells which antibiotics the orgnisms can be treated with KA sensitive to (and which ones resistsnt to)

I agree. There are times when my urine gets funky, when it does I drink more water and take cranberry pills and it clears up a few days later. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a full-out UTI, it has to be years. For myself I chose not to take any medications just in case I may need them for when I get a superbug.

At the least it means colonization, now days doctors prefer to treat if only symptomatic. As far as going away on it's own, in my experience rarely, if ever. Presently I use Vetericyn VF to keep my urine clear and free of smell, and without it I'd have nonstop uti's. There's a long thread here that's a good read for anyone having uti's.

I have had several kidney stones over the past few years. I also have cysts in and on my ovaries. Last year I was in sever pain and had to go to the ER. They found that I was passing 3 very large stones and never tested for a UTI. I had to follow up with my ob/gyn from a minor surgery6 weeks later. He had notes about my recent visit to the Er and decided to test me for a UTI. He found that I had a very bad infection. He also noticed that the cysts had gotten a little larger. He also explained that recurrent pain would be a given and that he wanted to monitor the cysts. Since then I have lost medical insurance. At this time, I am experiencing similar symptoms and have been for about a month now. Over the last 2 days I have had been feeling like I have a "bug", ie... chills, body aches and nausea. I don't have the money to pay a doctor to tell me it's a stone, or that its just "the cysts" Should I worry or just wait a while longer. My husband is getting concerned as well as my boss.

It would help if you filled out your profile and let us know what kind of spinal cord injury you have.

Check with your local hospital and/or county social services department about the availability of free clinics in your area and get into one as soon as possible. At a minimum you need a urinalysis (UA) and a culture and sensitivity (C&S) to determine if you have an infection and get treated if necessary.

What is your level of injury? How do you manage your bladder?

All the best,
GJ

Just curious as to why more people don't use Urex or another drug like it. Have there been problems with use or maybe just a preference not to take another medication? I have great results with it....no UTIs while on it nor for a very long period of time even after I stop taking it. I'd much rather take this than deal with the UTI's and antibiotics.

I took a look back on this site for threads about Urex (aka Mandelamine or Hiprex). There was quite a bit of anecdotal information about its effectiveness, but evidently medical literature doesn't support the anecdotal claims and the practice of prescribing it (along with vitamin C to acidify the urine) has declined among urologists. You can read a response from one of the SCI nurses at the thread below, Post #16.
http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/showthr...highlight=urex

Quote from SCI nurse at Post #16: "Mandelamine and Vitamin C were given many years ago to help acidify the urine in an effort to decrease uti's. The literature showed that they didn't do a whole lot to help prevent uti's and the prescription of them has decreased dramatically. It is not considered best practice at this time.

However, if you have tried other things and they haven't worked, you might want to give this a shot. I am not so strictly by the book- I do know people who have used it and believe that when they come off of it, they do have problems.

Overall, I don't believe there are many major long term side effects-

CKF"

All the best,
GJ
