Monkeygirl? How is she?
I just wondered if anyone knows how Monkeygirl is doing. I know she was going in to the Hospital in June for an operation and I was wondering if she's ok.
Thanks, Darlene |

She sounded like she had some real problems
That are going to take a lot of time, I think the worst thing she said she had was a shrinx.
Crashgirl got really screwed up. She fell asleep with a heating pad under her lower back and burned a hole right through to her spinal bones, she sent me a picture, looked pretty nasty. She ended up in the hospital for a couple of weeks, then was out a couple weeks and now is back there for reconstructive surgery, not sure when/If she is getting the Rods taken out of her back. SCI sucks thats for sure. Update, just opened my mail and got a recent pic, looks horrible, people, if you have no sensation, never, I repeat never, use a heat pad, you will be sorry. Actually I spelled it wrong, I meant Synrix
A Synrix is a short term for Syringomyelia which is a Cyst on the spinal cord that generally gets loaded with fluid and either requires a Shunt or a surgical procedure as in Monkeygirls case.

Shrinx...
is a group of mental health physicians, lol.
![]() Actually, it's not synrix, either. That's the name of an analog syntheseis chip! ![]() http://www.synthtech.com/cem/cemsynth.html Curtis means "syrinx." A fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord.... They're way too common after SCI for my likes and definitely require medical attention, ASAP. I hope the surgery is successful and the syrinx doesn't recurr. We also might get some eye-opening reports from MG when she returns. I bet it's quite an experience. ~See you at the SCIWire-used-to-be-paralyzed Reunion ~

It sure would be nice if she got some return
after the Operation, not sure if they'll end up doing a decompression too. I always liked Monkeygirl, I hope she is doing ok.

Hey Guys, Monkeygirl here!
Is this ever cool, you guys wondering and caring, what a night to pop on board! I luv this place. I must admit, I've been bad, I should have let you's no sooner, I have popped on for a minute a couple times since all this went down but wasn't into much posting. Now that I think about it, it was rather selfish on my part, I should have at least let you guys know I was still alive. Geez, sorry guys.
Anyway, I am alive and I had never experienced so much pain in my life, and I still am having more pain now than before my surgery, needless to say, this really sucks!! Seems rather backwards if ya ask me. The Diagnosis was: Posttraumatic syringomyelia The Procedure; in technical terms was: Thoratic laminectomy, microsurgical detethering of the spinal cord and a dural patch graft with fasia lata graft. In otherwards, He went into my spine to collaspse a cyst filled with spinal fluid which started at t7-8 and went up into my brainstem (freaky aye). He did this by removing the scar tissue around my fracture site thus allowing a clearer path for the spinal fluid to flow. While inside he decided to also place a shunt in there too, a double whammy I guess you could say. All in all, technicaly the 6hr surgery went well, at this point in time I beg to differ. Oh I know this would have eventually killed me but sometimes pain can be pretty brutal, I'm sure most of you guys agree! It's midnight here now and I'm toasted so I'm gonna go crash, I'll get back later and continue fill'in you guys in on what is happening now and more about the whole syringomyelia thing period, if you guys got any questions feel free to ask. Talk at ya later!

Monkeygirl - So glad to hear from you!
I'm glad that you are doing alright, but it sounds like it is still very painful. I see by rereading your last pre-operation post that the recovery was going to be quite a long time, so I guess you're right on track. I was hoping that you just didn't feel up to posting messages but were checking in the odd time. I'm glad it's over, and I wish you a recovery with less and less pain every day. Best wishes, Darlene |
