Uchic of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 202-416-7667 WASHINGTON, July 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- National directors and delegates representing the 35 chapters of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) will meet in Puerto Rico for PVA's 56th Annual Convention, July 29-August 3, 2002, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel & Casino in Isla Verde. Miss Puerto Rico Universe, Isis Marie Casalduc, will welcome the delegates at the Opening Ceremonies on Monday, July 29 at 9 a.m. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday, July 30 at 9 a.m. The location for all events is in Salons I-III at the Ritz Carlton. Other guest speakers include Dr. Margaret Hammond, VA chief consultant, spinal cord injury and disorders, strategic health-care group on Wednesday, July 31 at 9 a.m. and Dr. Robert C. Roswell, VA undersecretary for health on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. PVA's Annual Convention provides a forum for PVA representatives from around the country to discuss issues of concern to PVA members, other veterans and members of the disability community. This includes funding of the Department of Veterans Affairs ( news - web sites), ensuring quality health care for PVA members and all veterans, providing advocacy for all people with disabilities, supporting spinal cord injury research and enhancing rehabilitation through sports and recreational activities. PVA will present a host of individual and chapter awards at this year's Convention including the "Speedy Awards," PVA's highest honor. The Speedy Award is awarded in recognition of an individual's (both member and non-member) significant contributions to improving the lives of America's paralyzed veterans. This year, the Speedy Award will be presented to PVA members Richard F. Johnson of the California chapter and Larry D. Callaghan of the New England chapter (deceased), and (non-member) Michael Bilirakis, Florida congressman.
