Emotional homecoming for gridder

Emotional homecoming for gridder
Monday, November 5, 2001

The Associated Press

MONROE -- It was no ordinary homecoming game for Sean Denehy.

The Monroe High School football player, who broke his neck and bruised his spinal cord while making a tackle Sept. 8, walked onto the field Saturday to serve as honorary captain of his team.

"You can't get much better than this," Denehy, 16, told the Home News Tribune for Sunday's editions.

The injury left Denehy paralyzed with only slight movement in his right leg. But after two surgeries and extensive rehabilitation, he walked onto the field with a cane.

As he took the field, fans from both sides stood and gave him a thunderous ovation.

"Now it's my time to relax and get back to normal. This is my family, my boys," Denehy said after the Falcons beat Spotswood, 37-14.
