Newswise - Health professionals working with older adults may find the latest medical research in a new book written by a Ball State University educator. Gerontologist David Haber provides a road map to helping older adults maintain good health in "Health Promotion and Aging: Practical Applications for Health Professionals." He has updated this third edition with information on dietary supplementation, fad diets, community exercise programs, depression, cognitive fitness and relationships with pets. In his book, Haber stresses the importance of collaboration and communication between health professionals and their clients. "I believe in the premise that every health professional should be a health educator," said Haber, associate director of Ball State's John and Janice Fisher Institute for Wellness and Gerontology. "We should be working with people to change their health behaviors." The book focuses on practical applications and current research findings with 450 citations of research published from 2000 to 2003. The 14-chapter book contains model programs, questions for discussion at the end of each chapter, checklists, assessment tools, resource lists, illustrations and tables. The book, published by Springer Publishing Co., costs $57.95. Haber, the John and Janice Fisher Distinguished Professor of Wellness and Gerontology, has been nationally recognized for his teaching and research. In 2000, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education and in 1999 received the Molly Mettler Award for Leadership in Health Promotion from the National Council on Aging. Haber has been the author, principal investigator or project director for 20 major grants related to health and aging. His teaching experience includes social gerontology, community health, disease prevention, health promotion, interdisciplinary wellness research design and changing health behaviors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2003 Newswise.
