Plans for Neuro Trauma Unit at National Hospital, Colombo

Plans for Neuro Trauma Unit at National Hospital, Colombo
A loan agreement providing a sum of Saudi Riyal 45 million (Rs. 1140 million) was signed between the Saudi Fund for Development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Government of Sri Lanka at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday. The proceeds of the loan will be utilized to establish a Neuro Trauma Unit at the Colombo National Hospital. The loan is offered to the Government of Sri Lanka at a concessionary interest rate. The repayment period of the loan will be 20 years including a grace period of 5 years.

The objective of the project is to improve the health facilities at the National Hospital Colombo by establishing a medical care services unit for head and spinal injured patients. The assistance will be utilized to construct a new seven-story building with a total floor area of 11,000 sq. m. It will house 3 Operation Theatres, a 12 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a 20 bed High Dependency Unit (HDU), a Spinal Injury Unit, Neuro Surgical Unit, and a ward complex for 150 patients. The Unit will be provided with advanced medical equipment such as MRI, CT Scanners.

The facilities available in the existing neuro-surgery units in the Colombo National Hospital are not adequate to cater to the present demand. There is an urgent need to establish a unit with comprehensive neuro-surgical facilities to provide optimum care to neuro-trauma patients to reduce mortality and morbidity of head and spinal cord injured patients.

The Agreement was signed at the Ministry of Finance by Eng. Mohammed Al-Shawi, Director General, Technical Department, the Saudi Fund for Development on behalf of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Charitha Ratwatte, Secretary, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka. Dr. Reggie Perera, Secretary, Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Welfare also participated in the signing ceremony.
