Just wondering. Does anybody know how long it would be for a cure?

I'm not that up to date on research, although I should be. I was just wondering what everyone's opinions were on how long, or if ever for that matter when a cure may come?

It seems like every year the "Miami Project" comes out with a new pamphlet promising big and better things, but it seems to me when you get to the end of the pamphlet the last page is always the same "Please Donate." I believe it was not long ago that Nick Bioncitti (I think that's his name) was on Fox news saying that he firmly believes that there will be a human trial in the United States within one year.

Well sent his appearance, which was almost a year ago I don't think we are even close to having US trials in the United States. But that's just my opinion.

If anybody has any new information I would love to hear it.

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dann21;

Thanks for posting. The most important thing is to hold on to your hope. Secondly, I think if you do bring yourself up to date on the research that hope will be supported.

Much of the basic science on understanding the mechanics of the CNS has been done. Time frames for investigating theories and implementing trials in human subjects are driven by politics and funding.

There is significant work occuring at many institutions in the USA and overseas. The interest and motivation for restorative therapies exists at the scientific level but must be furthered at the political level.

That is why the recent Rally and advocacy efforts of the CRPF and The Miami Project are important. They are working together to spur on the research and to attain funding through political means.

Do not underestimate your ability to help this effort. The process is slow but is slowed further when we lose motivation. Which brings us back to the first and most important thing, HOPE.

John

the science is ready to attack paralysis, however the clincians aren't ready to lift their butts off the recliner.

Dr Huang's (China) Fetal OEC transplants are already producing positive results though the returns are modest at this time.

Wise Young has said that combination therapies will yield the best results but a lot of testing is required to find the best combinations.

If $400,000,000 is spent on clinical trials in the next 3 years and the Chinese Clinical Trial Network remains fully funded then there's hope.

When? is the question noone's prepared to answer.

Dann21,

Everything you read, w/o exception, is laced with disclaimers and caveats. Really effective application of therapies is still many years away. SCI research is still very much in the discovery phase. Researchers only hint at quality of life issues, i.e., sensation improvement, maybe bowel, bladder, and sexual function, which would be welcomed.

Substantial recovery (walking) and restoration to a significant degree of other lost bodily functions is a long way down the line. Think 15-20 years for availability, since the clinical trial process alone will take up half of this time table, if not more. It will happen, just not in the "near" future.

Dr Huang may speed up the process merely by the fact that he effectively is in a clinical trial phase already. He could move quickly to try some combo therapies.
