Please be aware that nearly all of the hotels Bob listed are not close-in. The DC area is extremely large and even if a place appears close, it may not be. I would suggest finding hotels in places like Ballston that are on the Orange Line and inside the Beltway. I also would avoid the really cheap chains in the DC area, unless murder and robbery are to your liking.

Would the Plaza be willing to give us till feb 14 to have our group register on their own for a group rate-and therefore the burden of cancelation would be on your own. Basically the hotel wants time to book the rooms, maybe they will give us 2 weeks. I agree with Clipper and Kap-those motel6 places can be scary

Clipper is right. A good number of areas on Bob's list are *really* out of the way & would cause extra headaches dealing with transportation to the Mall/Capitol... especially if this event is starting 10am-ish. DC traffic is a nightmare if you get caught in it at the wrong time.

If you guys settle on a hotel that needs to be checked out, I've got no problem driving up one day to speak w/ someone in person, as well as making a visual run-through of the actual accommodations. I'm 2hrs south of DC & travel up that way pretty frequently.

Scott, I will be driving down and would like to know if there is an exit about a half hour away from dc that is set up with motels for travelers, usually those exits are not sleazy. Do you know of one?

which direction are you coming from? what route will you be on?

I don't know off the top of my head, but I'm pretty familiar with what areas are ghetto & which ones are decent, esp. coming from the south. I know folks I can ask as well.
