Moving Out

I need to move out. I know that every teen says this, but I can't take it anymore. Parents are tired of doing stuff for me (not how they put it but, whatever.) and I'm tired of being in a place that isn't W/C accessible. I don't know where to start though. Trying to find a wheelchair accessible place isn't easy. Then there's the finances of it and making sure i have the skills I need. I emailed the Independent Living Place as they have an Independent Living Skills program. I have wondered if I should email my OT, but I don't seem him anymore and we did work on some IL skills a couple years ago.

Any advice as to what I can do?

You've already taken the first steps tword moving out... identifying what skills and finances you'll need is the first big step.

The next is doing what you can to work on making sure you'll have what you need.

Try to do whatever you can to take care of yourself now, that will identify what you need to work on most.

You don't mention your age, under 18 and over 18 brings whole different worlds of legalities. That you have contacted your local Independent Living Center is the best source of information I can think of. So many programs and such are different from place to place.

Good luck

What level are you? Are you able to be totally independant. I am T-10 complete and I moved out when I was 19, 2 years after my accident. The apartment that I moved to was happy to widen a bathroom door and install a mail slot on my front door since I couldn't get to the mailbox area. I also had a rental house and the land lord was happy to build a ramp for me to get up the front porch. Don't be afraid to ask them what accomdations they are willing to make. The apartment aslso made a handicapped parking space right outside my front door and a ramp. I've never had any problems in finding a place that will make accomadations in that arena. It's the public restrooms and some restaurant and stores that I find completely ridiculous.

I agree with offroaderswife , My bathroom , Bedroom doors widened and the Ramp is very important ... If you have a good nice landlord plus maybe your local DADS may be able to help you find these accomodations .

In some good towns there is appt's and small handicapped communities set up already .

Just Thinking
Anyway good luck in your endeavors .

I have Cerebral Palsy. I work almost full time, dress (have trouble with belt cause of fine motor and what not. Working on it), shower, do my hair (working on ponytail), can make simple meals. My biggest concern is cooking with boiling water.

It makes it a lot easier to do it with friends i.e. a roommate or two. Can you find a situation like that? Even if it's another disabled person?

Possibly. That is something I am considering.

Since you're employed check into your states vocational rehab and/ or department of social services (different states = different names). A friend of mine was able to get a ramp into their condo & bathroom modifications paid for because it allowed her to maintain employment...literally by allowing her to leave her house. I've had vehicle modifications paid for and my DSS counselor told me I could use the personal care attendant waiver program if I needed to get PCA care in AM to help me get ready for work.
