I think standing frames take up a lot of floor space, yes? Plus I'm sure I have some osteopenia or osteoporosis so my femurs would probably snap like breadsticks.
I just gotta figure out; how to keep on top of relieving pressure every 15 minutes....it's tough.....since I just had my ass sewn up again last November....I have to be extra vigilant. I would love to somehow get more meat on my ass. |

Hold on Steverino..... I am only pining for a medical breakthrough like an ass implant or reverse-liposuction. Don't paint me as some kind of perv that did a stretch in the can on a skin beef!

Fu, I have always used a high profile ROHO cushion. No way I would use a foam or gel cushion now. I'm just hoping that I can remember to do enough pressure reliefs during the day to avoid any more problems. For the first 25-30 years of my injury I never really had the need for any pressure reliefs...my ass was always intact. For whatever reason(s) now my ass is much more delicate and less forgiving. Even though my weight is the same, there is definitely less meat over the ischium bone these days.

Age sucks when it comes to skin. Smoke, maybe time for some hormone tests and a talk with a good dietician. Vitamin A and zinc are involved in skin building along with other minor amounts, but needed, minerals and amino acids. And if you smoke anything now would be an excellent time to stop.

Thanks Fu, Sue, Handsome and KLD for your responses. I took my moniker "Smokey" from our cat. I've never smoked any tobacco in my life. I did smoke weed in college and a few years after that. Unlike President Clinton I did inhale and I did like it. I haven't smoked any weed since maybe 1985. I haven't drank any alcohol since around 1995 and I haven't used any recreational drugs since 1985. Drugs and booze were never a problem...I just got bored with them I suppose. I was 24 yrs. old when I sustained my SCI and I will turn 59 in a few days. I am 6' 2" and weigh 180-185. I have a full head of hair and still have all my teeth. I exercise everyday. I drink protein shakes daily to get 50g-100g of protein just from the powder. I eat 3 meals a day. I've been with my wife for 30 years. She is an R.N. and a gourmet cook. I shower every morning and I'm up in my everyday wheelchair by 8am. I go to bed 8pm-9pm. I don't even like to swear anymore. I don't go to church but I drive by a lot of them, lol. I guess I'm telling you I lead a pretty clean lifestyle.
I do not have diabetes, my cholesterol levels are within normal limits, my blood pressure is typically 90/60. I did have Vascular Studies done on my legs maybe 15 yrs. ago because my feet had a bluish, dusky color. I did not have PVD at that time. I believe they said I had dependent rubor and venous congestion in my lower extremities. So I've been wearing compression stockings for many years. I feel pretty good for a 59 yr. old guy with a SCI. It does bother me that my body is becoming more delicate and less resilient than before. At this point, I would do anything (alter my diet, take some supplement, use a different cushion, standing table, etc.) to keep my skin and butt healthy. For those of you who haven't been in the hospitals and "rehab" hospitals lately as a patient, you wouldn't believe how stupid, careless and uncaring the people are there. |

Agree w/ Peter ... is there a point in the day when you can ditch the chair and lie down? In my case, it is b/c of spasticity, but If I stay in the chair all day w/o out a break, I am miserable, but 15 minutes of stretching on the bed makes a big difference.
It will also give you a change to see if the red marks are there at a shorter time point too.
