Butt is Pink Every Night
Every night when I go to bed my butt is pink on both ischiums. They blanch and in the morning everything is fine. I do more pressure reliefs now than ever....and I've been in a wheelchair for 35 years. My cushion is a ROHO, my wheelchair configuration hasn't changed, my nutrition is very good, my weight is unchanged. I did have surgery on my right ischium 10 months ago but both ischiums are pink. I should know the answer to this but I don't.....is it OK to have pink butt cheeks at night if everything is fine in the morning? I've been getting up at 8am and going to bed about 8-9pm. I seem to notice it more in the heat and high humidity too. Thanks.

Can you check your skin sooner than the next AM?? if the pinkness has faded within 20-30 minutes, you should be OK.
Just keep in mind that as you age, your skin becomes less forgiving, and less tolerant of pressure, and slower to recover from excess pressure or open wounds. The cushion (or mattress or seating configuration) that was right for you 10 years ago may no longer be right for you. (KLD) |

Maybe it's time to get a new seating evaluation done with the pressure mapping. Try to see a PT who specializes in a wheelchair seating.

A one-hour nap in the afternoon might relieve some pressure.
Aloe Vesta No. 3 lotion has worked well for my minor butt irritations from clothing or sweat. |

How often and for how long do you do pressure reliefs? You may need to increase them, and do them for a longer period.
Our PT told us that studies showed that recovery of tissues that became ischemic while sitting (i.e. lacking oxygen/blood supply) really need as much as 2 minutes of pressure relief to recover. Doing a press up/lean for that long every 20-30 min clearly isn't something most people do, but it was enlightening to hear that... Things change as we age. |

Next time you get your ass pressure mapped, experiment a little bit by moving and squirming around to see how you can relieve pressure. It's pretty interesting. |

Presently I don't, but I would like to get one. If there aren't other mitigating physiological conditions (e.g., orthostatic hypotension), it's a healthy activity and, to the point of this thread, time off your butt.
