Definitely not for a short or retracted penis. Much easier to pull off than ones that use adhesives.

It uses a gel seal, the condom goes over it, and then an elastic tape goes around the condom over the seal. Can't have the tape too tight or loose. Slight pulling it'll stay on, any more it'll pull off.

I do not know anything about this brand but I am interested in how you determine which model is best for you. Obviously, as a female, I have no personal experience. My 20 year old son uses the adhesive type with a skin prep. It is a three step process, swab with the prep, apply condom, hook to foley bag. He has had issues with removal but we learned that three drops of baby oil goes a long way to release the adhesive. He does it in the shower in the morning and it seems to be working.

Should we consider another type of external cath? I have no idea what they used in the trauma hospital but in rehab, they offered they type he uses and a type his hands could do himself (ring holder type). Since his manual dexterity is no longer an issue, we continue to use the adhesive type. They work because he can open the individually wrapped package as well as the skip prep. What does not work is that he has had issues of excessive adhesive. While I do not have a penis, I am sure that pulling off a patch of skin in frustration is not a good thing. I do know that going without overnight until the skin heals also is not so hot. Asking an able bodied man to use a urinal, while flat in bed, without spilling, is not realistic. To ask it of a very incomplete C-2 is down right mean.

As his mom and caregiver, I want to know from those who know, are other types of external caths maybe a better option? Should we just try a six pack of each to see what he likes? He has full control but cannot get to his urinal at night.--eak

I use an adhesive remover and have no issues pulling off skin. I've found the thinner condom catheter cause less skin breakdown. Also have to be aware of allergic reaction to adhesive. This link will help.http://www.uroweb.org/fileadmin/EAUN...EN_2008_LR.pdf

Hi "eak,"
Back in the day when I wore external male condoms many of the manufacturers would send you several samples for a free trial. Do a search on your favorite medical supply site, note the names of the manufacturers and search out their websites or phone numbers to request free samples of those your son may find of interest.

Here is a 2008 publication from Hollister that your son may find interesting. It has a description and discussion of several types of male external catheters.

All the best,

im 25yrs post used freedom cath exclusivly at night. they worked ok but had to use skin prep and tape and still would have a blowoff every few months. about 6mths ago i switched to rochester wide band, holly crap what a huge difference. no benzoin/skin prep or tape. these thing just do not come off.
sizing is key, they need to be snug while flaccid which means tight while hard.

fuentejps,

Regarding "... these thing just do not come off ..." - what is your technique for removing one? How long do you typically wear one before removing it?
