Paris Travel Advise needed..
or Advice :0 lol
Hi everyone, I am hoping to find some ideas for activities that are off the beaten path, unique and not typical to do that are relatively wheelchair accessible while in Paris. I can travel outside a few hours if need be as we will have a car. Of course I will be doing all the must see stuff also so feel free to advise on anything I shouldnt miss as well. I need transport from airport..so any ideas would be great..I may just try to stow my luggage and take Public transport to city for the day as my daughter and I arrive in morning and hubby wont be there till early evening. Is that feasible from airport to take a train or bus or subway into main city areas? Also, any ideas on where to rent a bathtub/shower bench while there? I can only find places that sell them..I need a padded bench with back. Thanks for any help--you can pm me if you prefer. Also will be in Amsterdam..so say hello if you are from there!

I was AB in Paris. Can't recall how we got to our hotel, must have taken a cab. We were kind of in the Paris hood; took subway everywhere.
Louvre. Musee d'Orange. Versailles (train). a boat on the Seine would be great. Catacombs-must see. The problem w/ Paris is they speak French. As in, no English in museums. And French is weird, nothing like Italian or Spanish. No comprende whatsoever. That sucked. In our hood ppl were kind. In Paris proper they despised our American accents. I've never been anywhere like that before. Buy lingerie. Try to figure out how to look French. Sexy stockings... Notre Dame must be a beast in a chair. It is lovely. Eiffel tower obvs. If I went back I'd take French history books-in English. I'd see much more WWII stuff. More French Revolution, less Napoleon. I don't know now but then there were hordes of Japanese. They didn't get our concept of personal space. Drink Pernod! Eat crepes! Ahhh, Paris. Be sure to laugh at the pyramid at the Louvre. They turned a beautiful building into an abomination. The seafood markets were amazing, no smell. We're divers and had never seen many of those fish! Last edited by betheny; 07-22-2012 at 12:13 AM. |

I don't like Paris, a friend of mine is in La Rochelle just now visiting the family of another friend who is using a chair. I know that her family went to the airport and picked her up and drove to La Rochelle. She said La Rochelle is really nice.
I don't know anything about accessibility in Paris, I was walking when I was there and I don't speak French. I love Amsterdam. My daughter has been there many times the last years and said the accessibility is nice, at least much better than here. People wheel in the sidewalkes and old people using a rullator is out. She was in shock and she is a nurse. Don't go in the coffeeshops in Amsterdam, it is forbidden for tourists now and the police is quite stright. I would have seen the Anne Frank's museum and the Van Gogh museum, but I don't know anything about accessibility.

Pari
((Sigh)) those wonderful memories. i just can't believe you said that Bente. I visited France three times twice Paris and Orleaon Pe booked an Avis car which was available to us at the airport. we left it at airport too on departure. there is also a bus and train shuttle service too which is wheelchair accessible but this was at orley airport. Food and resturants are a bit pricey but it is the worlds finest cusine while the usual American Big mac poison is also at every corner. Disney world and their rival Asteriks was wonderful.I was A/B however i used to see wheelchair people everywhere. i'm afraid not all metro subs are accessable plus you may have luggage to carry but they do have their own website to check out. i advise to plan out your visiting site plan, enter their websites and Pre book special a needs request not to be disappointed. online bookings are much cheaper too. as your louvre Beth that Napoleon was a nasty thief i saw many Maltese icons there. |

The only capitals I don't like are London and Paris. I love Rome, Athens, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and I like Toscana, the Greek Islands, the north of Norway.

i'd get a freewheel if you can, those cobblestones are a mess! and the french dont like accessibility very much... and get a lonely planet guide! they have great off the beaten path ideas. dont be offended if they stare at you if you speak in english, they feel everyone should speak french when they are there
i quite agree!also, TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!!!!! i'm tiny and can fit in a suitcase! |

Speak French. (Snorts)
I tried to learn enough to be polite. They mocked my Texas accent...I couldn't pronounce anything but Merci. Even sils vous plait was wrong! Most places appreciate your trying. In Paris they just shut me down at Bonjour. The concierge in the hood spoke great English. He insulted my French quite articulately! I like Rome best. Nice people that understand rudimentary Spanish LOL. Food in Rome is good but Paris beats it, truly. That French cuisine is every bit as good as I'd always heard. McDonald's for coffee. I do like American coffee. I dare you to tell the French that Napoleon was a nasty thief. Ha. Rome is also full of plunder. Chock full. Bente, we can't get loaded in Amsterdam? WTH? What are we supposed to do, go look at paintings and tulips? (Answer: Yes.) Wonder why they cracked down now? I feel better that the Parisians treated Bente badly. I assumed it was my obvious American-ness. I guess they hate everybody that butchers their language. If Bente can't speak it, it is HARD. Last edited by betheny; 07-22-2012 at 09:02 AM. |

Don't miss a visit to Claude Monet's garden in Giverny,
about an hour outside of Paris. I was there with my family in June 2010 and it was beautiful beyond words. There were many tourists there at that time so I didn't attempt touring the first floor of his house, but the gardens were spacious, accessible and glorious to view-- a highlight of the trip. |
