Do I need Java?

I just de-bugged my pc. 12 of the buggers came from Java Sun, or something calling itself that.

Also I used to use a site that analyzed my pc and told me when things needed updated for security purposes. Anybody know what that was? I have a menta image of unupdated programs dangling, just waiting for malware to latch onto it.

Am running avast free, it caught 12. Then ran malwarebytes free-it caught 2 more. One a trojan!

This pc was my husband's, then my son's. The mess could have been FAR worse!

I use avast, and I get java updates.
I like to know the answer too, since java asked to update every time I reboot.

Sun corporation produces Java. It's widely used. You only NEED to install a Java update when you CANNOT perform a function that you want to do without the update.

Assuming that you are using Windows - "Windows Update" is a feature of Windows. It can be set to update automatically, or it can be set to inform you when updates are available. Google will tell you about this feature and how to use it.

most likely you do need java, malwarebytes, Microsoft security essentials and ccleaner i use regularly, all free. Had maybe 5 total big infections between the 3 computers sense started using windows 7 when it came out, those 3 programs saved them every time.

Secunia PSI (Personal Software Inspector) is a free program that scans your PC, and tells you which programs require updates (it can download and install updates, if you set it to do so.) It takes a minute or more to load when you run it (drive scan takes longer), so don't be unnerved by that (scans can be set to run at times you aren't using computer.)
