Bleeding after cathing
Noticed some blood this morning, but did not think too much of it. Throughout the day I noticed a little more but not much. However, after cathing I got in the shower. After a couple minutes I noticed blood running in the shower. Looked and sure enough, penis had blood coming out of it.
I searched and read it could be trauma. About 2 months ago I changed from coude caths that I used lube on, to some hydrophlic coude type that you put water on and they get slippery. The reason for the change was the older type was hard to get in sometimes. These are going in great and virtually no pain. So I don't know where trauma could be happening. I have good sensation. |

Can you guesstimate how much blood you lost? A cup of red blood and you should head to the ER. If it is dark blood head for the ER anyway. Are you still bleeding? Any fever? I have pretty good sensation but had no warning before my first real experience with AD. Not pleasant.

Bright red blood is due to trauma. If it doesn't stop then you need to go to the ER.

Some of it is dark red. Been 2-3 days and it is almost stopped.
I have not lost much, maybe half a teaspoon. |

Are you having any difficulty with passing the catheter through the urethra?
A small amount of bright red blood, followed later by a small amount of darker blood may indicated urethral trauma, i.e., false passage in the urethral wall caused by the tip of the catheter. A urologist may want to do a cystoscopy and if you have a false passage, may suggest wearing an indwelling foley catheter for a couple of weeks to allow the urethra time to heal. You might want to consider using coude tip catheters. All the best, GJ |
