Rigid Chair & Car
I'm a T-8 complete para. I currently have a Ti Lite folding chair and use a Braun Chairtopper to store it on top of my car. Never realy felt comfortable/safe in this chair. I am considering a rigid frame chair and would be unable to use the Chairtopper. I would have to take the chair apart and store it in the car.
I would like to hear from anyone that currently uses a rigid frame and a car (not a van). What make/model chair do you use? What type of car? How easy/difficult is it to get the chair into/out of the car? Pros/Cons? Recommendations of chairs. Thanks |

Hi JMD I'm a T-10 I use a rigid frame chair it is a quickie gpv. I put it in a 1994 chevy extended cab truck no extra doors, just 2 door.I think the rigid chair is easier than the folding chair to put in car or truck . I pick up chair with the bar located at the back of the chair just below the seat and let it stand on the front end take one wheel off and spin the chair around on the footrest and take other wheel off. After I take wheels off I pull rope to fold back and then I pull across seat and put in passenger seat . I have put it in the back seat right between the 2 front seats. This is a little more diffuclt but comes in handy with women . Good Luck hotwheelzrz

I have a friend a t12 complete who has a rigid chair and a normal car, an Opel Ascona. She has taken her chair in and out of the car for more than 20 years.
About chairs, have you seen the Küchall chairs? http://www.hatfield.co.nz/Files/Scene-Vol-1.pdf Most nice chair I ever seen especially the Innovation and the Convention. I know you can get it in the USA too. And it is a good one. TH 12 incomplete 12-12-69. |

JMD, I'm a t1-t2 incomplete and have a Tilite ZRA rigid chair. I drive a Chevy S10 truck with extended cab and third door. I take the wheels off and put them behind the passenger seat and then fold the back of the chair down and put it behind the drives seat. On a good day I can do it in two minutes.

If you have good arm strength it works well but is kind of tricky getting it across the sterring wheel .

Hey, JMD, I am a t10-t11 para and I use a Quickie XTR with 26" wheels; I also drive a Honda Element. It has been my first car post injury. The doors open away from eachother like "suicide doors" (doors are stock). This car has been a great vehicle. I am able to pull the cushion and arm rests off, fold seat back down and without taking my wheels off; I am able to pull my whole chair into the vehicle and put it in the back seat. All four seats lay flat. I purchased a clothes hanger pole (tensioned) in the automotive section and placed it low and in front of the rear wheels of my chair so that it would not roll foward every time I stop. This has shaved alot of time off entry and exit time.
Hope this helps, Rob |

Another ZRA here, I've cheated a bit & removed the passenger front seat, with the rear wheels off & the back folded down chair fits perfectly in the space, its a 88 gran prix 2 door btw, I took out the passenger seat to save on my shoulders & the interior of the car a bit.

hey,
i'm a t6 complete para, and i have a quickie gpv rigid chair. i drive a '95 ford thunderbird 2 door car. i have found that this is a VERY easy car to put the chair into. (in drivers seat) i fold the passenger seat forward, put the tires in the floor behind passenger seat, put cushion in rear seat behind me, and the frame in rear seat behind passenger. really easy for me. my chair is REALLY scratched up from dragging it across the ground, but i don't care about that. i've gotten used to it when i'm gonna drive, but when i get into the passenger side, i've found it's pretty much impossible for me to do it, because i'm just not used to that. if i want any more passengers in the rear seat, i have them put the chair in the trunk. i'll be getting a ford superduty supercab 4 door soon. it has the rear suicide doors. to make it so there's plenty of room in the back seat, I'll remove half of the back seat. i've found that my chair will not fit into the back seat of a ford ranger, so that's why i'm going to get a fullsize truck. i like my car, it's great for me with the chair. i just want to be able to go muddin and duning. don't worry. after a few tries, you'll have loading and unloading down to a T. it only takes me about 2 minutes now. |
