Should you deflate tires when flying?
This Friday I'm flying from San Francisco to DC. I've never flown with pneumatic tires before. Are you supposed to deflate your towers when you check your chair at the gate? If so, how much do deflate them? How do you pump them up on the other end - I imagine the TSA wouldn't take kindly to flying with CO2 cartridges.

What do you keep your tires inflated to? I just switched to some Schwalbe Right Runs from solid Shox; the idea of inflating to 145 seems off-putting. Back before my injury, I never inflated my bike tires beyond 110. I guess there's a world of difference between a 700x23cc and 24x1" tube though.

No need to deflate your tires. However, if you sit on a ROHO air filled cushion during the flight......definitely let some air out as you reach cruising altitude. It hyperinflates and get hard as a pecker jacked up on Viagra.

Agreed, no need to deflate. I've got Marathons @ 145 psi and have never done so.

T8burst - I am flying into SF on thursday late afternoon. Have you ever taken the BART to downtown with a backpack and a roller suitcase without some able bodied help? I think I will not be able to pull that off with crutches shlepping a suitcase and think I will have to take a cab. What about you or anyone else for that matter? BART or cab to downtown SF. (Visiting son for father's day weekend).

BART is pretty easy from SFO, it really depends on how well you handle all your various accoutrement. Getting to the station can be a journey depending on which terminal you're arriving at. Then you have to get from the end station to your hotel. I'll remind you that there are hills in SF and they're pretty serious.
I always BART, but a cab is door to door. |
