Makes you wonder why more people don't volunteer to become disabled considering the tremendous upside. I certainly regret having waited as long as I did to become paralyzed. What can I say? I was young and didn't know any better.

I don't know what her 'needs' are, but her functional level appears to be c5-6, unless she's stated otherwise? But from how she moved, c5-6 seems about right, tho I'd like to see how she pushes and how her arms function more to get a better idea. As far as her needing round the clock care, that is excessive unless she has someone "on-call" for intermittent cathing or something, but having a roommate should lessen her need for assist in other areas. But again, she didn't give much info/details on what those "needs" of hers were. I'm functional c5-6 complete, although injury (neuro) level is c1-4. I always state my functional level, as that more accurately reflects my condition. People often state their injury level when describing their sci, which can be misleading, and it also isn't very helpful or useful to them or others, especially on a site like carecure or anywhere where accurate info is necessary, not only for better understanding but in order for that info to be applied appropriately and be of benefit. Yes, this has been a theme of hers and repeated often..I am sad to say it may be overcompensating as she doesnt want to appear sad or recieve pity. This is something many of us can relate to...I understand what she is saying..but it does across as a bit of denial.

I just didn't find it interesting enough to watch again, although that could be my fault for not watchng closely enough. Nothing grabbed me, inspired me really to focus. So I can't say i paid enough attention to know I didn't miss something that would contradict this, but at first bush I agree:

Although I realize you only can do so much in an hour, and maye they have other plans. And her winning the dance competition, especially without having spent much time preparing, seemed just uninteresting to me, didn't have any tension to it. I just think they could've done something more nuanced with it: show how good they could be but how much more must go into achieving that from a chair, or counter the potential perception that maybe the judges gave them extra credit because of their challenges rather than just found them the best. I don't particularly love these ideas either, but I think they could've done more with it. ------------------------------ I wrote this earlier. With cryptic's comments, maybe I will give episode three a go. But it was on Monday night, wasn't it, at least on the East Coast? I didn't record it. Any idea how I can get it now? I was surprised she won the dance competition, I have to admit I wonder if she got some pity points... If she had been practicing for a while I wouldn't be surprised, but it seemed fishy that she prepared for 2 days for this competition that she said was huge and major and then she won.
The toilet thing is in episode 2. I didn't see what the big deal was about it once it was in context. She had been practicing all day and came home exhausted, her arms hurt so badly she rang the doorbell instead of pulling out her bag and fishing for her keys. Then said how she had to pee really badly, so he carried her to the toilet because she was so sore and in so much pain. I've had to get assistance to the bathroom before. Wow, Mia's mother reminded me so much of my own. I was shocked when she made the comment that she wished Mia would have died rather than be paralyzed. I wonder if context around the comment was missing though to make it more sensational.

i like mia's attitude and don't see it as denial. i think her point is that people tend to focus so much on what they've lost and that becomes a damper on their life. she has accepted her disability as part of herself and so doesn't see it as some sort of huge obstacle, nor feels the need to flaunt it like tiphany does. i agree with this. i dont see my disability as being any different than my being a woman or a person of color. it just is. the challenges that it sometimes poses are really miniscule to my other life challaneges. woa, relates to those four noble truths in buddhism. no need to miss what was already gone.
i dont think the thing her mom said was done for sensationalism. it truly seemed like her mother just could not accept that her daughter could lead a productive life as a pwd. it was nice to see the turn around. similar to my own mother's journey. i dunno... in general, i do not find these women's lives very interesting so far. i do SO MUCH on a regular basis that i dunno. i'm from a medium sized town in new york state and they live in LA. i was expecting rubbing elbows with celebs at interesting parties/charity events/volunteering, fashion shows... more advocacy type things? i dunno... doing more than just going out esp to clubs (did that when i was 15 so it just seems lame) but angela... seems like such a great person and her sadness is palpable. it loved the juxtaposition of wearing white to her celebration of life party. dunno if this was the intentional meaning but in many asian cultures white is a color for death. and there where moments where the camera caught her, everyone else around her smiling and talking and she was sitting there and looking sad and lonely. i've been there. for very different reasons but i've been there. |
