Scuba Diving
Just went Scuba Diving in Kona on the big Island in Hawaii.
Try it!!! Went with Jack's Diving Locker. I had seen their name advertised on an accessible Kona website as accessible. They did seem surprised by the wheelchair and not quite sure what to do... but were super nice and game to give it a try. Also came up with solutions for jumping in... putting down a foam pad at the edge of the boat to sit on, etc. DEFINITELY would recommend them to someone else in a chair. The hardest part? Getting on that wetsuit! |

Very cool, thanks for the pictures :-)
I was once in the water with a Manta ray and it scared the hell out of me but it couldn't have cared less about me. Haven't been back in the water since I started having trouble and needed to use a chair. I've been curious. I'd like to try a few minutes in a pool first though there is this beautiful beach at a state park with warm water I would really like to swim at. Maybe this summer I will dip my toes in the water and see what happens. :-) |

How do you keep your feet from floating up? I can't get horizontal when I dive. Have to wear ankle weights and dive vertically, it's an odd thing. Is there current there, so you're drift diving, or are you physically swimming w/ those dive gloves?
Great pics. I need a vaca. Sigh. |

I'm an instructor for the Handicapped Scuba Association
For floaty feet about the only real option are ankle weights. |

Hi Tara. When you did your dive were you a certified diver? My husband and I will be doing a dive this afternoon in Maui and have been told that because we are not certified no cameras can be taken including those that are incorporated in the goggles. I was told that even the professionals are not allowed to take cameras because we are not certified. They told us this is a rule set by PADI. I saw your pics so just thought I'd ask.
