Jay2 explosion!

Okay, maybe not an explosion, but the cleanup effort made it feel like one.

This is not the first time this has happened, so when I saw my cushion cover start oozing white paste I knew I was in trouble. One of the compartments in my Jay2 cushion was leaking. It had been leaking for quite some time because when I took it apart, the stuff was everywhere.

If you don't already know, the 'gel' in a Jay cushion isn't gel at all, it's much more like toothpaste or caulk. And it was everywhere.

It was so bad it was starting to leak on my pantlegs and crotch. Not good. Since I don't have an extra cushion around I had to improvise.

I cut open the cushion and sliced off the leaky compartment. Using gaffers tape I cobbled together a solution that placed the remaining gel compartments directly under my coccyx. (those orange foam pads were part of the cushion, but were sealed within the gel layer)

All in all it's a pretty decent solution so far. After a week there's no pressure issues. I'm sitting a bit lower, but it's not a big deal.

So the moral of the story is that if you're working out with 40lb dumbells, do not repeatedly drop them on your wheelchair cushion as this will most likely cause it to hemorrhage and make a mess of your evening.
Also, you can do anything with a utility knife and some gaff tape.

You did a great clean up job. That "gel" is really one of the worst things that NL (wife and caregiver) has ever had to deal with. We tried everything to cut it. Denatured alcohol worked the best. I wasn't dropping weights on mine. Jay cushions can spontaneously loose a heat seal and ooze.

All the best,
GJ

for toothpaste, it didn't make my breath any fresher.

I had one pop once, and you're right- that gel is disgusting.

Had a couple pop over the years, of course after the first one I got a "Never seen that happen before" from the Jay Rep in Vancouver.

I think the life expectancy on these is 18-24 months. Everyone I've ever had (4, I believe) has eventually busted (usually after several years).

I've been a Stimulite man for the last 10 years.

brian,

Your impromptu J2 "solution" exhibits a degree of determination and resourcefulness that would be welcome in an executive role - have you considered running for office
