This is an interesting subject for me as i had many dreams of being on the road unable to get up and only being able to drag my self off the road with my hands prior to my injury, ever since my injury i never had this dream again... Spooky eh !
Usually when i dream i am un aware of being in a chair, some times i find dificulty walking other time i am in the chair and i think to my self i should just walk and u usually get off the chair with dificulty but eventuall start walking. I also dream of BMX riding and Riding a Motorcross bike quite frequently (this was my passion pre injury, also what caused my injury) One of my most memorable and disturbing dreams i had was about a month post injury, i dreamt that i could move my legs and i was in my hospital bed, it was a miricle and i was healed.... The dream was so vivid and real i truely believed it was reality, when i woke up to find my self still paralised i cried all night, it was like i broke my back all over again. I dream in colour and i am not on any pills for sleeping, my dreams are often quite violent and i find my self in something that resembles an action movie and i quite often find my self getting shot or killed. Very interesting topic...and I find your theory relevant for me as well.
Shortly after I was injured (5yrs ago) I had a dream that I was walking through big snow, wearing boots that made walking even more heavy. After that though, my dreams changed...I was picturing myself totally free from such barriers. But then, bit by bit, I started to dream of myself with braces or in my chair, or walking but having to be careful about BB problems. Marcel, I too had an experience like yours... dreaming in detail how I get cured, how feeling and movement is coming back. It felt very real for me too, it was a very powerful experience. An interesting dream that repeats itself every now and then is of me lifting up in the air and flying freely... It's wonderful and it always makes me wonder what's the meaning of this dream in my particular situation... because dreams that come back over and over do have a special message that needs to be deciphered. "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.." (Friedrich Nietzsche) |

Dear Rick, Jimnms, Kitten and Jan,
Thanks all for your answers. Whatever the nationalities or culture differences we can say that dreams are universal in SCI individuals (at the clinic we see French, Spanish, Italians, Americans, Swiss, Irish, Kuwaitis, Iranians). Your dreams corroborate one another and suggest that the unconscious plays a crucial role in the progress you can make. To answer Brayton, it is not "psychobabble that condescends to spinal cord injured patients," but a thorough research of phenomena inducing a SCI, whether it is in the affective, body or unconscious fields. Our study, which spreads over 2 - 2 1/2 years shows it. But you have the right to think that its useless. We meet and talk with SCI patients every day and we are not interested in their dreams only, and we know where meaningless psychobabble begins. Piela, if you want to share your dream diary apart from the forum, why not? You can email us at albert@laserponcture.net. Theres always something to learn from. Albert |
