First Grants Awarded In Maryland!!
I'll have to type up the layman's language summaries of what the following really mean because I only have hard copies. But this is the first round of grants that come from the SCI Research Board Fund law passed in Maryland during the 2000 session of our General Assembly and funded beginning January 15th, 2002 by a surcharge on the tax health insurers pay on premiums collected in the state.

Karen, get out the champagne!
This is an human study of OEGs that are removed during surgery to remove tumors in that general area in living humans and from those who die from TBIs. It's basically a study into the best way to remove them for human theraputic use and goes into the growth factors expressed, NGF, BDNF, etc and how to best get those expressed.Seneca, each grant this time was for $150,000 and may be renewed if needed for an additional year for a total of $300,000. The fund currently gets $1 million a year and that money stays in the fund and may not be returned to general revenues. So we do have to plan for multi year contracts but we don't have to worry if we don't spend the entire amount each year. Thanks Max. Your letters and spreading the word around the internet for more letters to politicians here helped make this a reality for all of us! ![]() Courage doesn't always roar.
