Diarrhea

I eat a relatively good mixture of foods though i could do to eat more veggies yet almost every 4/5 weeks i have a bout of diarrhea. I am on no medication and as i say eat pretty well now compared to efore the accident. I have gone to my drs on a few occasions but even though the medicine he prescribes generally clears me up the same thing happens approx 1 month+ later.

Any ideas guys??

Could be a food allergy or some form of colitis - worth getting your GP to send you for further tests if you are not getting any answers.

If it's any consolation, I've now had it for 13 weeks without reprieve, despite taking firstly loperamide, co-codamol and amitryptyline and more recently, Tramadol and Loperamide - during this time, I've lost 12 kg (around 2 stone)

This is the second time, in 2 years, the first time, they diagnosed me with coeliac disease (allergy to gluten) and that did get things under control for a while - but mine started very similarly to yours the first time.

The most recent colonoscopy has shown I have had ischaemic colitis.

I have found I can get a reduction in the frequency by taking pro and pre-biotics
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Bifidobacterium Lactis
  • Fructo-oligosaccharides
I take them in a product from Boots (UK) called Bio-balance.

Hope you manage to get some answers - the GP is only likely to be able to take you so far before you need more specialised investigations.

ETA - because of my gall bladder problems I have now removed fat and fatty meat and products such as caffeine from my diet - but the problem is ongoing and it really doesn't matter what I eat

Your baseline immune system plays a role if it is a bug catching you every so often, that being said, the pre/probiotics should elevate this to some extent.

The point is, frequently it has nothing to do with bugs, as it never has in my case - the OP should be speaking to their doctor who would presumably have ruled out any bacterial or viral cause.

I shared my experience, because the OP's sounded very similar to how I started - and there isn't now and never has been any type of bug (in fact I've been subjected to so many different tests I could declare myself officially 'bug free'

Unfortunately - as I've discovered - often there are no answers - and you just have to learn to live with it - not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination

Hi,

You don't mention what your bowel habits are when youa re not having diarrhea. Do they alternate with constipation? Recurrent diarrhea usually denotes some type of abnormality. Try searching IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and see if that fits for you.
You are right, though, that increasing fiber and fluids is always a good first step.

You also don't mention if youv'e had a screening colonoscopy (recommended for people >50yo). Suggest you get that done if you are within that age group.

My normal routine is to go once a day with generally a firm 6-8 inch bowel motion usually a "good" colour. I don't have a routine as such just go when i feel the need. These last bouts of Diarrhea seem to start with maybe not going the once a day and a general soreness/tenderness in the stomach. The motions then seem to become thin, wet and dark. After perhaps a day of this the Diarrhea comes and perhaps lasts for a couple of days or until the immodium kicks in. I am 40 this year and have been to see my gp to arrange a referal for a colonoscopy. The biggest impact has been on my walking because i just seem unable to get away from the feeling of wanting a motion and i am in no rush to soil myself again.
