usually when you turn it on, you'll see a quick message about pressing F2 for setup, different computers have different buttons, some says F1, some say the DEL key as soon as you turn it on, should hear a beep and then the message will appear real quick, press the key it says, once in setup look around for the CPU temp settings you can change it to reboot at a higher temp, but if the cpu gets too high, it'll burn up best thing would be to open the case, usually just two screws on the back and the cover pops off and blow all the dust off

the biggy is your antivirus program, they all have 'signature' files that are updated all the time to catch the latest program. open up yours and see when the last signature update was, should be with in the last week, if not click on the update button or tab to get the lastest, once updated, run the virus program again

The results from the adaware don't sound like they are causing this. It does sound like a hardware issue to me too. It is a desktop isn;t it, not a laptop?
You said it keeps going off AND on? You mean right after it turns off, it turns itself back on? How long in between?

Do you know if it is the CPU (computer) or the monitor that is going on and off?
Does the computer restart by showing you the boot-up screens like when you've just turned it on? Or is the same stuff showing when it comes back on as was there when it went off? I know you have talked about house power problems before. If your computer isn't hooked up to a UPS, a cheap one might be a good thing to get. There's several things that could be the problem. First thing to do is to make back-ups of any data files you deem essential.

Thanks everyone!!!
![]() It stayed on good for an hour. Then I cut it off normally and an hour later it came back on by itself. So I closed it back down & unplugged it overnight. This morning: Plugged it in at 6 am but left it off. Then around 8 am it came on by itself once & cut itself right back off by itself. I left it plugged in but it never came on by itself for the next 3 hrs. 11 am I cut it on & it's been working normal all day. Thank you Lord Jesus!!! I got a small blow fan this morning & faced it right on the back of my pc. So maybe it was hot. Probably. Bruce my aide acts like she's scared to open it up. Is it just a matter of unscrewing one side? What do you blow it out with? hair dryer? Will it hurt anything blowing around inside? I don't know what to not blow on. My antivirus program is AVG & it updates automatically & runs every morning. But I will look to see if there's a new update by chance. thanks! btw mine doesn't come up & show me a page like you described. Just says window xp. Then I click on my signature & there's the desktop. Thanks sjean that's good to hear. Yes desktop. russianboss how'd you replace the power supply? Foolish it's the CPU & it's rebooting. Not the same thing from last time. Is UPS a power supply that keeps it on a few minutes when there's a power surge. It's on one of those after my last pc got fired. Definately working on coping my important stuff. Thanks!

Yes Mona, it sounds like you have your computer plugged into an UnInterruptible Power Supply (this is different than the power supply inside your computer). This UPS should stabilize the voltage that your PC is receiving from your house wiring, and it almost rules out your house current as the problem.
The power supply that Russian Boss is talking about is inside your computer case. It's not hard to replace, but it does require some minor skill to get the case open, the old power supply disconnected and removed and to install and connect the new power supply. Opening the case and blowing out any dust would be a good first step to try. If you have a vacuum that has a blow feature, that will work. You can also buy compressed air in small cans at places like Radio Shack. Also make sure your internal fans are working. You might need somebody who has some comfort with doing this to help you.

also, in the bios, alot of computers have a setting for 'wake up'
so when they're power, and the 'off' computer recives a wake up call, it powers itself up automatically. thats a great feature on a network so it can automically do updates to the computers while everyone's gone. but not really needed at home, you can check it in your bios and turn it off if thats in there, remember when you power it on, it';; beep and then display a quick message, like press DEL for setup.

Thanks Foolish & Bruce.
I'm glad I have it on the right device. I'll have to look around for someone comfortable but 1st I'll get a can of compressed air. Meanwhile I'll try to catch the setup when it comes on. I can't do anything till my pca comes later. Thanks for helping me try to figure this out!!! I'll get back when I make my next step.
