compact car

OK. I am thinking of taking a cruise leaving from Port Everglades and my plane arrives in Miami. Transfers cost an arm and a leg so I am thinking of renting a sub compact or a compact to drive to fort lauderdale, park it for a week and then use it for a couple of days. Thing is, I have never used such a small car after my accident.

How difficult is the transfer to a small car? It would be a max of three or four transfers per day for a couple of days.

Hi- I am T-10 complete and I drove a 2000 4 door Honda Accord until this year when I upgraded to the 2010 Honda Accord. The new one is 4 door and a little bigger and I honestly had an easier time getting in the smaller older Honda. The new styles have deeper seats so I have to jump over the edge of the seat more than I did the old Honda. I've been in several smaller cars such as the the Civic, and Toyota and had no problem.

Everytime I've rented cars with hand controls they put me in a big Monte Carlo for the same price as a compact. They always say that they are not allowed to put hand controls on the smaller ones. I hate everything about the Monte Carlo so if you get them to put controls on a compact car please tell me which company you use and I will go with them in the future.

will you be renting a car with hand controls to drive or travelling as a passenger? If you've got long legs it may be an issue on a sub-compact with hand controls. I travel as a passenger in my buddy's Nissan Versa from time to time, no transfer problems.

I rent cars (medium and small) all the time and have also been in cars as small as a Sentra and a Corolla. I'm pretty tall as well. Transfer wise they're pretty close to an even transfer. They're actually easier to transfer into than larger cars in my opinion. On the newer models the doors open nice and wide and you can pull up pretty close for the transfer.

At first I hated renting cars because I was scared of getting something I couldn't use very well. After three or four rentals I learned to enjoy getting to drive different kinds of cars. One time I got a hot rod Mustang in Atlanta (only mid size that was available) and it was pretty fun. Convertibles are fun as well if you can swing it. I rented one in LA and drove up the PCH to SF several years ago and had a great time.

I usually drive myself. Usually request hand controls but carry my portables just in case, I have found that to be extremely useful from time to time. A Corolla would be fine, but probably would end up with an Aveo or something similar, unless they have hand controls installed in something else. I would definitely fly into Miami, much easier flight for me. Thanks for the input. I will just take the risk, I won´t be in the car that long. If the transfer is OK, I am confident the rental would be fine.

My wife has a Corolla. It's a great little car... but it's little. Transfers aren't bad, though you'll notice a difference. There's not a lot of room for loading a chair comfortably, but it'll get the job done.

That said, I agree w/ roc21. Just fly into Ft. Lauderdale & take a regular taxi to the port. Been there, done that.
