Smith's foundation gets big boost from Bruins By Matt Williams staff writer The Salem News Thu Dec 23, 2010, 06:00 AM EST Tom Smith's story begins with the dream of being a professional ice hockey player. It was very fitting, then, for the next chapter of his life to get a big boost at center ice in an NHL arena. Monday at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins Foundation and InVivo Therapeutics presented Smith a check for $15,000 to help support the Thomas E. Smith Fight To Cure Paralysis Foundation. The on-ice presentation came during the second intermission of Boston's game against the Anaheim Ducks earlier this week. A Swampscott native, Smith started the foundation after he suffered his second traumatic spinal cord injury while playing hockey in 2009. The foundation is committed to helping fill the void in medical services for spinal cord injuries in New England. "Thomas exemplifies a level of courage and selflessness that everyone can admire and that we should all aspire to," said Bob Sweeney, Director of Development for the Boston Bruins Foundation. "The injury he sustained playing a sport he loves and excelled at has not slowed him down one bit." read... http://www.salemnews.com/sports/x258...t-from-Bruins# |
